Well, it turns out to be trickier than even that! When I boot either HR24 with the cable to the dish unattached, I can get to a playlist, but can't play any of the programs. It appears that now, then you boot a receiver, it checks for authorization so no dice on any of what I wanted to do.
Inkahauts...you've been proved more right than I thought.
Going back into my old DVDs, I see that some of them DID come off DirecTV, off my old HR10 HD Tivo and I am more than sure that it was not connected to a dish when those recordings was done. Different world, different software.
Yes, I get it. If you're not paying for the DVR service you won't be able to use it and yes, DirecTV has every right to check for authorization with every boot. But this change has left such a sour taste in my mouth that, even if the other suppliers operate the exact same way, there's no way I'm sending a nickel to DirecTV after my move, especially when you combine this with their refusal to carry new college football programming. And yes, I WILL pull stuff off my DVRs from now on! Thanks to all for their help with this, even though I really didn't like the answer.
