FWIW;

The "Back9Network" reached a deal with DIRECTV to come this fall.

Good news for Golf fans I suppose even though it appears to be only an SD channel.

Will be on Ch.262 currently being used by the "GOGO" infomercial channel.

DIRECTV sub. since Sep. of '95

Based on the content, this sounds like it might be a channel paying Directv for placement. Maybe that's why it is replacing another infomercial channel.

If it's SD only, that's a definite "skip" for me. The sooner the SD channels are gone, the better. :)

This 'channel' has been around for the better part of 3 years looking for distribution. They used to run regular commercials on SiriusXM's PGA Tour Network touting that they would be coming to a cable/satellite system near you in XXXX year. They would always change the year when they couldn't sign any distribution deals. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they are paying to be on DTV. They aren't in the low 200's or the 600's with the rest of the sports channels, and I really think selling a golf network that doesn't actually carry any tournament golf has to be a tough ask for a distributor to buy into. On top of that, the network's had several missteps along the way documented here: http://articles.cour...tement-chivalry and http://courantblogs....rovocative-pix/ and http://articles.cour...ogram-state-aid

From Wikipedia, it says 1080i. Does this mean they only broadcast in HD?

That's just how the master C-Band feed originates, the SD conversion occurs with a transcoding receiver at the provider's headend. ESPN, Disney Junior, Universal Sports, Fox's entertainment and sports channels and CSN do the same thing.

Thank you. Hopefully we receive it in HD.

Since they won't have live golf coverage and won't be in HD, I can say that the likelihood that I'll be watching will be close to 0.

In the meantime, there are numerous programmers' HD not yet getting added by DirecTV. (…Bandwidth concerns, perhaps.)

There's already a thread on this:
http://www.dbstalk.c...ing-to-directv/

If they're paying their way to be on the lineup and replacing an infomercial channel like MavTV and Newsmax is, it probably won't be in HD.

Woops - missed that thread - perhaps a mod can merge this into that?

Agree, slim to no chance that I'll watch if it's not in HD. Too bad,  it sounds like it could produce some good shows.

If it is HD it will be on my favorites list. If it is SD it won't be, even though I am a big golf fan. Bring it to us in HD.

I just checked it out.  Not only is it in SD, but it appears the entire channel is presented in letterbox format.  When a commercial came on, it was letterboxed inside a pillarbox inside the main letterboxed program area.  In other words, it took up about 30% of the screen and looked weird as all get out.

A while back, we started getting the BYU TV channel in 16x9 SD, meaning it appears full screen on HDTVs, even with the lower resolution.  I wonder why they don't do this with channels like Back9 that are apparently providing a full 16x9 experience?  At least with BYU, the picture quality seems better than just zooming to fill the screen via the box or TV controls.

The problem is the numerous SD receivers out there automatically crop widescreen channels, they don't have an option to switch to letterboxing. For channels like BYU where they have a 4:3 safe zone it's fine, but for others where they use the full 16:9 window for graphics it isn't. Most networks that originate with a widescreen feed have AFDs to tell the headend when to switch between letterboxing and cropping on the SD feed but for whatever reason Back 9 isn't using them. Since nearly all of their programming is original and it's limited to commercials, they probably see no need to, unlike other networks that air a mix of widescreen and 4:3 programming.
