I stopped paying attention to this stuff when they decided that there were more than three types of atomic particles.  How many did they get up to before they started purging them? 50? 60?

Where did the stuff that went bang even come from, and why did it go bang?  Oh, forget I asked, because we couldn't possibly know.

It's usually safe to talk honestly and openly with people because they typically are not really listening anyway.

Either the theory is wrong, the math is wrong or the universe does not exist.

I choose option C.

"During the early universe, we expected cosmic inflation — this is a rapid expansion of the universe right after the Big Bang," said study co-author Robert Hogan, a doctoral candidate in physics at King's College in London. "This expansion causes lots of stuff to shake around, and if we shake it too much, we could go into this new energy space, which could cause the universe to collapse."

And, therein, lies your explanation. Everyone knows that a properly mixed universe, as ours quite clearly is, should always be stirred, not shaken.

"We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force." - Ayn Rand

Higgs Boson Theorist Claims Universe Shouldn't Exist

...and yet it does!

A few scientists seem inclined to deny the obvious -- perhaps it's the n.i.h. factor, perhaps

it's because they are so smart, they're dumb. I remember when someone announced that

God  was dead. Whether it was a scientist, a theologian or Madeline Murray O'Hare, I don't

remember.

It seems that every so often someone comes along with a 'grand' pronouncement that, if

believed, tends to upset the applecart of beliefs or theories. It's "the emperor's clothes"

all over again. Whether challenging science, theology or just traditionally held and widely

accepted beliefs, the pronouncer usually gets the attention they seek, thus this thread and

its dubious source.

The other side of stating the obvious is denying the obvious. We all know and accept that

the Earth is flat. Don't we?

The only you can say for certain about the universe is that nothing is certain about the universe.

Not if you're going with the flow of traffic :)  We have established that the flow of traffic is whatever speed multiple drivers are going at (in another thread) so traveling at the speed of light is acceptable as long as you are not holding up others behind you who wish to go faster ;)

Personally, I have always believed in option C. I know I'm just a figment of the imagination of a weak universal mind consisting entirely of gravity.

The article and this thread are proof that it does exist.

If it did not, there would be no one to question it.

I think, therefore I am.

Until a few glasses of wine, then I cease to exist I guess!

To be serious for a moment...

The "I think therefore I am" concept really doesn't work.

The experiment can't validate itself.

We can conduct tests inside a fishbowl to see if our theories hold up... but we are able to do this mostly because we are outside of the fishbowl, presumably able to reduce or eliminate outside influences to that fishbowl.  It's never perfect, but it is as close as we can get to impartial observation.

As to our own existence, however...  we are in the infinite fishbowl of the universe... no way around that, no way to step outside it and get an impartial look...  So "I think therefore I am" means very little.

We can program a computer to say that..  people could be "programmed" to recite that... we could even have complex algorithms design to introduce pseudo-randomness into our "thoughts" that give the illusion of free will and independent thought.

It is highly unlikely we can ever truly know such things definitively.  That's just how it is.

Without going into any detail, I'm willing to agree that the universe exists. How it started, how long ago, and how long it will last may not have been pinned down yet and may never be.
