DIRECTV®’s policies and procedures...

I'm not trying to represent Directv but I do tech support for them and per our resources they are recoverable models only if not being replaced because it's defective.

In other words if it's defective they don't want it back but if it works take it.

Correct! For example, if someone calls in to deactivate it because they don't want it anymore they will get a recovery kit.

hmmm...  they don't want HR24's back, and today I got a replacement for my dead HR21, and it's a shiny new refurbished HR23...   :(

 

In some situations the HR23 could be seen as an upgrade. Not so much with your setup.

Any ideas what I should expect to replace my HR24-100 which has started to stutter during live TV?

 

It is currently my fastest DVR and the one I use to access content on all of the others in my home theater.

 

I have an AM21 so mentioning that usually ensures me an HR24 of some sort in return, but if there is something faster I can get, I can move the AM21 to the Genie.

Already have a Genie plus at least 1 of every HR20 and HR24 flavor. Are we allowed to have two Genies yet?  :grin:

Im pretty sure the HDDVR freezing issue is a known problem. Replacing it with another HDDVR would likely give you the same problem.

You might put an external drive on your 24-100.  It's easy to do and it should cure your problems.  It sounds like your internal HDD is going bad.  Just a WAG on my part, but when you get the stutters it's usually the HDD that's causing them.  You might try clearing your cache and seeing if that works.  Just reboot twice within 30 minutes and it might clear up your problems.  How full is your 100?

Good idea. Forgot that it accepts an external drive. Yes, I agree the internal HDD is dying - typical symptoms. I cleared guide cache, CLEANMYBOX, NVRAM clear, etc. Problem is the HDD as you astutely noted as it only occurs on live TV or on recordings on that box - watching recordings from another unit via MRV works fine.

 

So I don't have to go and look, I assume the 2 TB limit is still in effect?

I have a HR24-200 who's HDD was starting to make some loud noises at night (woke me up!) about 4 months ago.  I called D* and they sent out a 'new' refurbed HR24-200.  They didn't want the old one back and didn't send a shipping label.  I called D* to confirm (I didn't want to get charged due to a miscommunication) and they said 'you can dispose of it, we don't want it back'.  I still have it as I have recorded programming that I haven't watched yet.  When I want to watch something still on it, I simply plug power into it (of course, I don't connect the coax).  When I am done watching everything on it.. are these units worth any money to someone who can replace the HDD and re-activate the IRD with a new access card from D*?  Just curious.

I'm surprised you're still able to watch recordings on it after that long...

 

It would only be worth something to someone for parts. Others won't be able to activate it on their account.

Yup, the limit is still 2TBs for the 24s.  Here's a link to an HDD that I've been using without any problems on a 24-100.  Not a bad price but a little more than I'm used to seeing.  Couple that with a good external device and you should be able to keep that 24-100.

With my luck, I'm probably the only person that's had a problem with CLEARMYBOX, but I thought I'd mention my issues with it since I've had another one.  The first time I tried it, it threw my MRV system out of whack and the other day I used it on a 20-700 that isn't part of my MRV and I lost the sound on the 20-700.  A reboot fixed that, but I'll not be using CLEARMYBOX any more. Two issues with it is more than enough for me.

Call this number: 877-887-7994.  That's the direct line to the Access Card Dept.  They'll tell you if the set is leased or owned.  If it's listed as leased, ask them if you can still sell it.  As long as your account is in good standing they might let you sell it.  If it's owned you can sell it.  There's not much in parts besides the power supply that anyone will want, but an external HDD can still be used on it.

No.  None.  I really thought my good ole 20-700 was shot the other day when the sound died.  A reboot fixed it, but I can say with some degree of certainty that CLEARMYBOX caused it.  After I put the command in, I went to bed and didn't use it at all.  Then I wanted to watch a football game and no sound.  That's never happened to my once in all my years of playing with HRs.  The only thing I can really think of that caused the sound to die was the command.  I'll be quiet about it now, I'll just never use it again.
