771 on random channels?

Last night, I tried to watch a standard def channel but kept getting pixels and the dreaded 771 message. But, when I'd switch over to an HD channel (or the SD of a HD channel), my picture would be fine. We had heavy rain yesterday, so I thought maybe there were just some storms in the area. This morning the problem was still there even with clear blue skies and nothing on the radar. I restarted the receiver and did all of the updates and still nothing. It seems to be getting worse. Shockingly, this is the only "normal" acting receiver on our whole home. I plan on swapping this receiver out with the other one downstairs, but I just wanted to see if it would be a waste of time. I checked the signal strength on all of the receivers and they all seem to be in the low 70s (except for the troubled one which is lower). Could this be a dish alignment problem? I just don't want to pay $50 for DTV to come out here and make something up. The receiver is a h24/700.

(One more question...if I decide to replace the faulty dish with my old non-HD tivo, can I just swap the access card out and put it in?)

Definitely sounds like a dish alignment issue. Call DirecTV.  Also, no you cannot swap access cards between receivers.

A correctly aligned dish should have most transponders on 101 in the high 90s or even 100 (some are spotbeams and might be low or even zero).  If you have a 5lnb dish, 119 should be mostly high 90s/100 also .

99c/103ca/103cb should all be in the high 80s to mid 90s (ignore 99s and 103s, these are only spotbeams.)

As of typing this right now, my signals are as follows (101):

(1-8) 82 80 82 85 80 95 83 95
(9-16) 81 81 82 95 82 96 85 96
(17-24) 85 0 85 95 83 96 86 96
(25-32) 84 0 82 95 85 96 83 97

This is on the main tv (DVR). When I go to the faulty receiver, however, the numbers are mid 70s-80s. Is it normal to have that much of a difference between 2 receivers? The other 2 that are connected to the DVR show around the same as the DVR.

Swap the receiver with the other one and see if the readings are the same or better.

 

This will identify if the problem is either ( A or B ) or ( C ).

 

Plug the bad receiver in where the good one is as well - again, this will narrow down the problem.

There is a pattern in the numbers that you posted. Look at them and you will see that every other one is about 10 numbers different.

Example: 82 95 82 96 85 96

When the readings are high , zero, high, zero is an indication of a bad connector. This appears to be a degrading connection in the line somewhere, possibly outside the house.

ok, I unplugged the DVR and plugged the faulty one in. The readings are about the same as I have on the DVR (most in the 80s). On the one I moved upstairs, the "new" receiver is mostly in the low-mid 80s, with a few 90s mixed in. All of the receivers in the house are showing about the same. Could this be a cable problem outside? When we installed the new HD dish in 2010, it took 4 service calls to get the installation right. If I remember correctly, the installer put one of the components on the dish on upside down, which broke in the brutal winter we had in 2011 (replaced a week later). Could this be an issue again? It seems like we've had nothing but trouble with DTV ever since upgrading in 2010.

Given your rather low readings on 101, I'll bet your readings on 99c and 103ca/103cb are even worse. Can you post those?

 

I think you need to have Directv out, as at minimum your dish probably needs to be aligned, and there could be other issues with cabling/connectors or the LNB.

 

A properly aligned dish should be able to get readings in the mid 80s to mid 90s for all transponders on 99c, 103ca, and 103cb, and all 90s on 101 (except for 4, 12, 18, 20, 26, and 28)

Also: not sure if this is related to the low signals, but a few weeks ago, we started having audio trouble with the DVR. We used to have the volume at 11-13 and now it's more like 16-19 just to be able to hear it. Is this related to the signal or an update?

Those signals are awful!  Your dish is out of alignment.  Best to call DirecTV® and set up a service visit to have them come and re-peak your dish, free with protection plan, otherwise $50.00

I'll call on Monday and hope I can get in for sometime next week. It's not really affecting my viewing except for the one tv, but I know if I let it go, it'll only continue to get worse. I'd love to know how it got knocked out of alignment. It's not like we go on the roof and kick the dish.
