I read that Value Electronics just started to ship the first
Hughes High Def HD TIVOs HR10-250.

I live near Los Angeles and I have been waiting for
the HD TIVO for a long time. A salesman
at Good Guys told me they have about 800 units pre
ordered and that deliveries will start in May, and that they
are the only Southern California store to carry it,
so I better order it from them or else.
(the Good Guys act as if they were the God Guys.)

I can't understand what is going on:
this product should have been already available months ago,
and now there is such excitement around it as if the manufacturers
were not able to produce enough to satisfy demand.

Where to buy this in Southern California besides Good Guys
(which I do not like for bad previous experiences)?

What are my best options?
To preorder a unit going through the Value Electronics
site? (they are in the east coast).

Any reputable dealer or vendor that you know of, where
I can get one unit nearby?

I'll appreciate any help regarding this situation.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

 Based on my own experience and the experiences of others, not only on this forum but also at www.tivocommunity.com, you are in a world of hurt if you want one within the next 2 or 3 months.

Good Guys' pre-orders are enough that even if you order through them you probably won't see one until July (at the earliest). Best Buy and pretty much any other big retailer is going to have the same result. Best Buy was taking pre-orders last week for a few hours but then stopped, presumably because they had enough orders to kill their allocation.

Unless you are lucky and find some smaller retailer or some other company who is just starting a pre-order list, you're looking at a late summer delivery for your HDTivo or you'll be buying one from someone on Ebay who is asking a premium.

Just my $.02

No matter where you order one from, if you ordered now, you're likely to have it no later than early to mid June. However in the meantime, you could pre-order from several retailers (at least if they offer you the oportunity to cancel and get any deposit back if you get a unit elsewhere), which probably gives you the best chance of getting one soonest. If you don't order now and just wait, as more units get in people's hands, it's likely more people will place pre-orders, and it could become a vicious cycle for a few more months waiting for one to show up on a shelf.

Finding smaller retailers is probably the only approach that might net you one sooner, since the bigger storefront chains or more visible online retailers get a lot of attention, the smalelr stores may get a small allocation and actually have them available since without all the attention there's less likely to be a long waiting list in place for them.

Many thanks to Uwahusky and Doug Swallow.

I just placed an order with Value Electronics, so
now I can return to worry about what I’m going
to do, to whom I should start talking to some
day enjoy ABC, NBC and FOX in HD, as I live between
mountains (no OTA reception) and I get all my
HDTV programming from Direct-TV, and they only
deliver CBS in HD : (

Regards,
Paul

Well, FOX HD is coming to DirecTV by the fall; and there've been several rumors that DirecTV has been negotiating with ABC and NBC to do something similar.

If you're really stuck, look at getting a subscription to ExpressVu through an address broker. ExpressVu offers ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and PBS from both Boston and Seatlle, all in HD. There's a couple brokers; the only one I know with a web site anymore is www.canamsatellites.com.
