Has anyone had any experience with the on-demand offerings that most of the Premium Channels offer--HBO, Showtime, Starz all have them, as does BBC America, others probably do also. From what I can read, the services that offer these (mostly cable so far) include them with subscription to the premium packages. Any word on if or when Dish might make these available? From all I can read, sounds like a great concept for viewing or catching up on cable-based series or watching the latest movies without having to plan for them. On the other hand, might be detrimental to PPV business so there could be some balking by the cable and satellite providers, but isn't this just the next step toward what we all understood would become a watch what you want when you want TV world? Curious...

Well there is a trial run on DIRECTV at this time with Starz. Only for people with DVRs, it automatically records the stuff during the night when the unit is off for playback when you want. Perhaps some day Dish will offer something similar.

Dish and DirecTV will probably not offer true VOD (like cable does) simply because there is not the bandwidth available to offer that (like cable has). What will probably happen though is what is mentioned above where a DVR from E* or D* will record certain programs for later optional viewing. If you put a 300gig drive in, that would get you around 300 hrs of storage which would be quite alot that could be VODed. You could perhaps pick the channels and programs you want recorded and be able to watch them later.

Cable has won the VOD war simply because the storage at the server side is pretty much limitless.
