What up with this new 625?

The ever-so-popular HD DVR 942 has now been replaced by the new MPEG4 622 HD DVR, which is in stock. The new MPEG4 HD single tuner 211 receiver is in stock as well, and 625 DVRs are at Dish Depot at the lowest price anywhere.

I just bought the 942.
Bill
Thanks

I feel your pain. My father just bought a 942 in December after the chat where they were going to use turbo rather than go to mpeg 4!

The 622 has been discussed in the forums for a long time, we knew it was coming and it was announced several times at various events.

BTW in your title you say 622 in the message body you say 625. Those are two different models. The 625 replaces the 522. The 622 replaces the 942.

There is supposed to be an upgrade deal offered in April for 921/942 owners.

Bill, you have been a member since last year, are you serious when you insinuate that you haven't seen any discussion in here about this?

Did you buy the 942 after Feb. 1? If so it would be interesting to know if Dish activated it so you could receive HD.

In a nutshell the 622 is the mpeg4 replacement for the 942.. all new HD content will be broadcast in mpeg4 and unavailable to non-mpeg4 receivers.

Who did you buy it from? You might want to consider returning it.. it will indeed work for a long time but you won't get any new content, no HD locals..

By the way, welcome to DBSTalk!

yes, bad timing bc. But, the 622 is mpeg4, which is what all new HD channels will be. This was a required move as it saves bandwidth, so more channels can be broadcast from few transponders.

the nice thing is, you can upgrade the 942, IF YOU WANT, starting 4/1 for $99. You don't have to. You can keep what you have now if you like. But if you want HD locals when they become available, or the new vooms or other such stations Dish is adding, you'll need to upgrade. But your 942 will continue to work for at least a year from everything we've seen.

Now, the $99 deal is a lease, but a new 622 is $699, and even if there were a lease fee for the 622, it would take like a ten years of $5 a month to pay out $600, and Dish is installing any equipment you might need (with a 942, I wouldn't think you'd need anything). Unless you think you'll keep this one box more than 10 years, that's not a bad deal, as it's not like the unit will be worth much in 10 years :) Nor is it likely to still be a viable receiver, though maybe it will. That'll be interesting to see.

Total Bummer! This is one of those things that happens in Consumer Electronics. There is always a new model. Your best bet is to just pay the $99 after April 1 and get upgraded. At least then you have access to all of the material and the 622 does look like a really nice box. I have been sitting on my 6000 with no record capability for a number of years just because it was the only receiver that had a RGBHV output for my CRT projector. With the 622, in addition to the $299 upgrade cost, I had to purchase a $200 Transcoder to convert the Component Video signal to RGBHV. Hopefully I can sell my 6000 for a few hundred on eBay to offset some of the cost.

I called Dish about this and yes they will activate it as long as you already have 9.99 HD pack on the account. If you're new customer of course they won't activate 942.

Sorry about the typo it was 622 I was referring to, and yes I had seen there was a new unit coming out but I though it was a hard drive up grade not a new receiver. I have been absent to the forum for a while so I might of missed the details on the 622.

Thanks Bill

Does anyone know if you can lease 2 or more 622's? I know with the 942, you could only lease one and you had to buy the second. I would like to upgrade my 942 and 501 with a 622 each --- but I don't want to pay nearly $700 to do it.

I've asked several times and the answer is consistently no.

I just talked to DISH about this today. As others have said, you can only lease one. The person at DISH said you can buy as many as you want (up to a total of 6 on one account) but activation of more than 4 two tuner DVRs (8 tuners) must be handled by a special department.
