I'm moving to a place where I can *finally* go to satellite if I choose. And now, everything is different with DirecTV and I'm strongly considering just sticking with cable (grrr) even though the monthly cost is $26/mo. higher for fewer channels.

The thing is, I really don't want this R15 box. DirecTV in my mind has 3 major advantages (or did) -- Tivo, NFL Ticket, and the overall cost. Now Tivo's gone. And currently, it's the NFL offseason, so the Ticket right this moment isn't a big pull (until next year).

The cost is still MUCH cheaper with DTV, but they increased the time commitment to 2-years -- so if I end up eating that I'll lose any savings I would have gained. Why do I want to enter into a *2* year contract for TV anyway?

I had a friend that ordered DTV with Tivo in November and his service is great. Is there NO WAY to get that setup (with the R10, or at the VERY LEAST, a 1-year agreement) anymore?

Suggestions appreciated...

you can still find the R10. you may find it at the local BB or CC. Even Ebay is an option.

Don't know what to tell you about the 2yr commitment. they ask for that from current customers. One thing to consider. If you are an NFL fan, the NFL contract with DirecTV goes till atleast 2010. So you know NFLST will be available both years.

No way to avoid the 2-year agreement...but it's not iron-clad. If you find you need out, you can return the equipment and be released.

As for an R10, I bought two of them last month at Wal-Mart for $99 each. Try several stores in your area to see..before you pay too much online or on eBay.

Weaknees still has DTiVo models available - 70 hr new units for $189 (I recommend the Samsung 4080), 35 hr refurbs for $89 ($114 w/access card), and custom upgraded models w/140 hr to 900 hr :righton: at prices ranging from $299-$1199. These are for existing subscribers.

R-10's - http://www.weaknees....ect_tv_tivo.php

Philips, Samsung, etc. - http://www.weaknees...._tivo_deals.php

They even have the new lease model in effect for new subscribers w/DTiVos available, with prices starting at $49 after rebate -

http://www.weaknees...._new_system.php

This includes 3 MONTHS OF TOTAL CHOICE FOR $29.99/mo. PLUS HBO®, STARZ® Super Pack, SHOWTIME UNLIMITED® and Cinemax® for FREE (Offer Valid: March 1 -- April 29, 2006)

There is no way around the 2-year commitment if you are a new subscriber getting new equipment. The penalty isn't too severe though, and once you start using DTiVos you never want to watch TV without one anyway :)
Fox News : It grows on you... kinda like cancer.

Supplies of the R10 must be getting short. That is about $100 premium from what the R10 used to go for. Value Electronics seems to have run out of them as well.

As of March 1st Directv owns the equipment there is no way out of the two year contract that isn't expensive. You now must return the leased equipment and pay a $300 penalty per the new contract.

Not according to the explanation that DTV mailed to me, although I signed up prior to 3/1.

It's $300 or return the equipment in good working condition.

Lease program went into effect 3/1/06 so you weren't affected by the change, but now it is too late.:( :( :(
