"...a victory for the little guy"

Microsoft's Xbox 360 came up the big winner in H3TV's "Fight Night" challenge last week at the Apollo Theater in New York City.

The competition, which aired on the hip hop-/video game-themed H3 network, pitted the latest Xbox against the much-anticipated Playstation 3 in a head-to-head showdown aimed at proving which system offers the best HD performance.

Organizers loaded copies of EA Sports' "Fight Night" boxing game into both consoles and handed the controls over to a stream of local rappers and professional gamers, displaying the action on an oversized 1080p split screen in the theater.

And, true to form, the Apollo crowd was vocal in their reaction.

"Xbox is flat-out better both visually and mechanically," said Adrian "Hollywood" Walton, H3's chief communications officer. "When 'Fight Night' is played at its highest level with the highest possible resolution, everyone was able to see Xbox 360's superiority to PS3 as clear as can be."

In a way, it was a victory for the little guy, as the Xbox currently holds only a 20 percent market share, versus the PS3's 60 percent share.

Video Game Systems Continue Brisk Sales

According to wire reports, sales of consoles and games for the big four video game systems (Xbox 360, Playstation, Nintendo's Wii, and the Gameboy DS) rose 15 percent in November to $804 million.

A lot of this was due to highly-anticipated titles like "Gears of War," "Final Fantasy XII" and "Call of Duty 3," but the big surprise came from Nintendo. Considered an also-ran by many, its new Wii console outsold Sony's latest offering by more than 200,000 units in November, despite offering less processing power and fewer games than both the Xbox 360 and PS3. And the company's Gameboy DS continues to rule the handheld niche, moving nearly one million units last month.

Still, Sony isn't completely out in the cold. Despite supply problems in many areas, the PS3 is still on track to sell 1 million units by the holiday, and the Playstation 2 remains the best-selling console with 664,000 units sold.
