OK, this is what happened to me today. I swear it happened. How many have a DD 7.1 system with only 5 speakers hooked up? OK, probably just me. Been having all kinds of audio problems with local feeds, and HD channels. Sometimes I would get DD ProLogic, mostly PCM-48 (whatever that is)

Been working on the room anyway so this isn't something I just tried to do to see what would happen. Had 2 speakers in the living room as remotes that weren't needed. So I brought them into the TV Room and hooked them up and OH MY GOSH! All the channels/commercials are back. Everything is Dolby Digital 2. Cept for the XM stations which say PCM so I don't know what they should be.

Does this sound right? I suppose it's possible, but why would some channels work and others not and why did it start on the 145 release on 3/30?

Kinda weird huh? So I guess if you have a 7.1 system and only 5 speakers, try hooking 2 more up to the L/R Center channels and see what happens.

Sorry for the rambling but that's what happened here. I would be curious if anyone can use this as a solution.

OLK, Updated audio story. Got to do some channel surfjng and this is what I discovered from what did.

I did add 2 more speakers for a total of 7
The stereo does now 90% of the time pick up the DDII stereo surround

Commercials and some programs I get that had the problem still have it. But now at least I can hear something depending on which 1 or 2 speakers it comes out of. :) So still a problem with the locals. XM Radio mostly shows PCM 48 but somtimes will bump up to DD Pro Logic. Don't know what it's supposed to be. Normally.

A couple of tips for you and your Sony receiver. Now that you have added your two new speakers, if you purchased your reciever new and still have the auto calibration mic, plug in your calibration mic and run the auto calibration program. This will automatically set your speaker sizes and distances in your receiver. Just make sure to place your mic at listening height and in an area where most people will be sitting in the room.

As far as listening to surround sound and DD sound, be sure to set SB (surround back ) decoding to ON in your receiver. This will force your receiver to decode the rear channel all the time. Also be sure that you select an A.F.D. mode for two channel stereo sources otherwise your receiver will continue to automatically switch sound fields depending on which sound signal it is receiving from your digital source, which explains why it is changing all the time on your system, and a possible reason why you're having problems with commercial audio when watching HD channels or channels broadcasting DD 5.1 sound. I personally have my PCM audio signals set to Dolby ProLogic IIx which decodes two channel audio to 5.1 discrete channels which sounds almost as good as true 5.1 DD sound.

One other thing to be sure is set, is to be sure DD is set to ON on your HR20.

Good luck with your setup.

Good suggestions. Only had all the HD stuff for a few months along with the stereo. Used the able and it worked well. Will look for the SB switch and menus. Darn book reads like stereo instructions. :) Got a few storms moving through here (DFW) so I'll wait and mess with it. I figured it would just compensate for the lack of te 2 middle speakers, not gve me a whole new world when I put them in.

Watching Nightly news, NBC in HD. commercial on, just playing out in the right 2back speakers.
