Supposedly they are testing out putting movies on PPV for $40 I believe and the first is suppossed to be transformers. Not sure if it is all PPV though.

Anyone hear anything about this?? It would be phenomenal.

I have heard of discussions of the concept of doing it.... there was an article about it about a year ago... and that was the last hint of it happening.

But as for it becoming a reality, especially now... with a potnetional summer blockbuster.....

That would be phenomenal...

But resurecting my "rumor mill" grading scale....
That would have to be a 1 out of 10 10 being a done deal.... 1 being throwing an idea on the wall, and seeing if it sticks.

But if they did this I would definitely do it, if the price came down a little.

Sorry for firing up the rumor mill, just got excited.

It has merit... but guess not this time around...
But IMHO... if they want to do something like this, they are going to have to target a MAJOR movie release, not just some of the smaller ones.

I agree that is why I thought this one had legs. Guess not though.

Also I think for people to pay $50 for it, it would need to be broadcast in HD. I love the theater experience but I could do without the crowds and noise sometimes. Plus I would be able to pee whenever I wanted. Hope it comes to fruition soon.

I look at it this way...

We have a group of 11 people already going to the July 4th showing....

$10.50 a ticket = $115.50
~$8 a person for snacks... $88

$200 basically for our group to go...
..........

If we could get it for even $50 on PPV....
It costs $2 for a 12 pack of Coke... $6 for a 12 pack of Lite
Have some real food instead of snacks (like burgers and brats)
Pop some popcorn.... ect...

And probalby not even clip the $100 mark.

Plus... we can all get together at a more convient time, and just watch the show... then play cards or something afterwards...

What is this "Lite" you speak of. ;)

The concept has merit... definitely a money "maker" for the studio and a money saver for the viewer.

The risk of a couple people doing "big" viewings is outweighed by people like myself that don't go to the theaters anymore (too much $$$, too many headaches, don't wanna find a babysitter - and my home theater is "good enough" for me). So in the end, I think the streamlined distribution and access will probably draw in more money than the single "bill" versus per person bill.

I really hope they decide to float the idea to see how it works out. i think it is a win win for everyone. Not sure where the reluctance comes from, my guess would be the movie theaters.

My guess is people recording the movie and having a perfect HD copy of it instead of buying the DVD or selling copies.

Some smaller budget movies are airing on HDNet, DVD and in theaters all on the same day. I think the concept is great. Even if they did this 2-3 weeks after movie theater release it would be successfull for them and great for us.
