Ran across this on dealuniversity.com website. Personally not a fan of buy.com, but a 1 terabyte e-sata external drive for $229? Sounds too good to be true.

DirecTV HR20-700 x 2, HR34 Genie x 1, H20-600 x 1,
plus lots of other cool looking and sounding stuff,
like HDTV's, DVD Players, Pre/Pro's & Amps, and
some great sounding speakers!

Cineplex, I'm running a WD Caviar GP WD10EACS 1TB in the KingWin eSata enclosure on my HR21. Is working flawlessly. Fired right up and only took about 5 minutes to initialize the first time.

I'm running a WD Caviar GP WD10EACS 1TB in the icy dock.

I did jumper pin 5-6 to disable the 3gb buffer. It will not boot completely. I worked all afternoon.

Is it the ICY DOCK? I plugged the system into my laptop using the USB2 port and the laptop recognizes the disc drive, but of course since it is not formatted it won't use it. But at least this proves the drive is good.

ESATA, E-SATA, you say tomayto, I say tomahto.

I am open to suggestions.

Confirmed HR21 setup working. I am running the HR21-700 with the Antec MX-1 enclosure and a Seagate 750gb drive I ripped out of my non-cooperative FAP.

THANKS GAM!

There is a standard, so SATA is SATA and eSATA is eSATA. :)

I don't understand why my 3 eSATA user configured drives all have been working flawlessly for months with the 3gb enabled. I'm not complaining. Just curious.

And I agree with you on standards - However, in studying the rear panel of my brand new HR21, I find that DirecTV labeled that particular jack "SATA."

I had to fiddle around with an SATA plug to see if they were correct or not! (They obviously were not!)

I'm new to the HR20-21 world and was attempting to find out what I needed for an external drive. I recently spotted a Western Digital My Book 1 TB USB/eSATA at COSTCO for $299.

I guess from what I'm reading, it sounds like a good deal. Any experienced users out there?

Thanks, Bert

Either this thread or another one has several mentions of the fact that most MyBooks don't work as a dvr drive.

Thanks Guys!

After my post, I eventually discovered two posts in other threads that said My Books "Studio" Edition wouldn't work, and I suppose there could be others. Originally, however I expressly searched the forums for "eSATA" and only this thread came up.

As it turns out Western Digital has several similar but slightly different external storage drives, as found on their web site. As well as My Book Studio, they have My Book Pro; My Book Premium; My Book Office; My Book Home: My Book World, etc., etc. They are not all eSATA, of course.

In that same series I found another drive called My DVR Expander, an eSATA 500Gb drive they designed specifically for a TiVo Series 3, TiVo HD DVR and some Scientific Atlanta DVR's. So I suppose it's not too much of a stretch that other models COULD possibly work.

Until I get back to Costco to check, I have no idea which model I saw. But, I wouldn’t go back out today, the ‘Black’ Friday after Thanksgiving, if they were giving them away!

(I’ve at least convinced my wife that this is a great buy and if it doesn’t work on the new box I’ll at least have a good backup drive!)

Thanks again for your quick response.

Others have posted that the DVR Expander works with the HR20. There is $50 mail in rebate on those, but you have to buy it by 11/30.

I am thinking real hard about doing this and it seems that the Seagate Pro is what most of you are using. This will mainly be used to obtain extra space while on vacation.

Will the drive work in my HTPC after I do not need it for the HR20 and will it work on the HR20 after being used on my HTPC? This is of course being empty.
