Thank you. The FAB was freezing up. Where do you suggest buying anAntec MX-1 enclosure and SATA 3.0GPS hard drive? Also, will I need to install the hard drive in the enclosure? I'm not a techie so if so it needs to be simple.

If anyone has more suggestions I'm open.

Thanks for your help!

You can get the enclosure and drive below. Yes, you have to install the drive into the enclosure. It is very simple even for a non techie. Lots of people here have this combo and it's proven to perform. It's also compatible with both the HR21 and HR20.

Antec MX-1 for only $28.49 after a rebate (link below).

GaryB357 -- Installing the drive into the Antec MX-1 enclosure is very easy (the install instructions are all in graphical pictures detailing each step). You shouldn't have problems unless your mechanical aptitude is "all left thumbs". I love that enclosure - very easy installation and very quiet and cool.

I would recommend the WD10EACS - 1TB drive rather than the 750GB version. It's more expensive, but gives you much more (38% more, after the housekeeping area is subtracted) room.

The best prices (except for the Amazon rebate) for both, that I had found was from ZipZoomFly (I've ordered from them before with no problems & prompt delivery). The Amazon MX-1 rebate ends in 6 days (Jan 27th).

Damnit, can't pass up a rebate on the Antec enclosure, had to buy another one.
Thing is, you know what that means, now I've got to get something to go in it. :)

Yup - I did the same. I'll make that decision when I get back from visiting relatives. HDD prices are changing rapidly, so waiting a week (my case should arrive from Amazon on Feb 5) won't hurt. It will be another 1TB drive, either a Seagate model or the WD10EACS, depending on the prices at the time.

My WD10EACS is working great so far, but it's only been a little over a week (just barely past the "Infant Mortality" period - I'm an ex-reliability engineer).

FYI, if you don't want to deal with the rebate hassles, Staples(at least my local one) has the Antec enclosure on sale for $35.98 this week.

Also an FYI, that drive from newegg.com is an OEM so it only has a 3 year warranty, instead of 5 yrs, that the retail versions have(I believe they sell the retail version too). Just something to keep in mind.

The local purchase for $35.98 sounds like a better deal with less hassle. If you're like me though and ordered from Amazon you'll need the rebate coupon from the website. But wait, the website deal has changed even though the sale was supposed to go for 3 more days - now there is a different price, no rebate link, and Amazon is now fronting for ANTOnline (BTW, only ever order from them if you're in no hurry to get your stuff) instead of selling directly.

Luckily for me, I still had the rebate pdf up on the laptop from the night before so I saved it off then printed it. So I've got a copy of the Amazon Antec rebate form if anyone needs it.

I'm looking into this enclosure as well, but I thought the Antec MX-1 has a limit of 750 GB? Have the tech specs been updated? Thanks

When the MX-1 came out I'm not sure that there were any 1 TB drives out there so that's why you see references to the 750GB limit.

I've been running my WD10EACS in the MX-1 for a couple of months with no problems, and just yesterday got another MX-1 for the bedroom HR20. Another WD10EACS is in en route.

After reading through this thread, I ordered the MX-1 enclosure and a WD10EACS. Put it together last night and plugged it in to an HR20-100 this morning. No problems at all!

I don't know if this has been posted before, but I'll give it a go. I had first installed a FAP on my HR20 and for various reasons decided to replace it with another external hard drive. The FAP did run hot with my HR20.

I then decided it would make a good external backup for my PC and I've installed it today. I've left it running for several hours without using it and it is barely warm. I can feel a smooth vibration from the enclosure so I think it is constantly spinning.

The point is, using a HD in a DVR has to be one of the most disk activity intensive purposes for which a HD can be used. It has to be beating the HD to death all the time.

What is the difference between these two WD Drives?

WD10EACS and the WD1000FYPS ?

or

Best Buy has the 1TB WD10000CSRTL on sale for $299.99. Will that drive work?

What do you guys do when your hard drive fails? I bought a Venus DS3R Pro Enclosure and I am putting 2 Hitachi 1 TB drives in it running RAID 1 so that drive 0 mirrors drive 1 in case of failure I simply replace the drive and I am back in business without losing settings or recordings.

I installedthe MX-1 enclosure and a WD10EACS last week. It seemed to be working ok. The past few days, my HR20 has locked up a few times requiring a reset. The only other thing that has changed is a software update that occured on Friday to "oX1ea". Is it the new drive or the sortware update?
