My bad. I didn't notice the refurb!

I almost jumped on it, then I saw that it was a refurb. Kinda hard to believe something that cheap gets refurbished.

Just a brief report...

After about a year and a half, my Samsung HD204UI started to sputter continuously while watching recorded shows. After failing the diagnostic tests (both the short and long S.M.A.R.T. checks), the drive has been replaced with a WDBAAY0020HN or WD20EARX drive. I have another HD204UI on my HR20-700 and it's still working fine.

Did you clone the old drive over to the new drive?

Today's problems don't worry me, I haven't solved yesterday's yet.

No. I watched everything on it and took advantage of the holiday moratorium on new shows. The only thing that I had to get it set up for was the new Dual Survival tonight. I thought about copying what little I had on it but with it failing I figured they might not come through anyways.

Now I have to wait for the guide to populate and then I can get the rest of my series set up.

Glad it worked out for you. That is my one fear with going with an external. I'll have so much on there and <poof> it's gone.

And that is why I have not considered a HR34. Hard drive dies and too many shows are gone as well as the use of clients.

I use external hard drives on 7 DVRs (now HR24s) and usually get around 3 years before the drives have to be replaced. I use green WD 2TBs; have not had good luck with the lower priced Seagate drives.

I've never tried a Sammy HDD on an HR, but I tried them on TiVos. Just my opinion based on my experience with the TiVos, but I had more trouble with the Sammys than any other HDD. I've avoided them since then. The EARX is a good HDD.

Thinking of purchasing a WD My Book DVR expander WDG1S10000. I have an HR21-100 and an HR20-700 and I would like to connect it to one of them. After sifting through this thread I have some questions. Approx how many hours of HD can I record on 1 TB? Can the drive be switched from one DVR to the other without losing what is on the drive. I understand you can only playback those recordings made by the DVR it is currently attached to. If you have old recordings on the internal DVR before connecting the external drive can you access the old recordings by disconnecting the external drive and rebooting the DVR? What happens if you get a software update when the external drive is connected? I assume if you disconnect you do not have the update. Thanks!

~ 250 hours depending on the content. There is no "set in stone" figure that I know of because the content determines the hours. But, as a rule of thumb, 500 hours for a 2TB drive (which is what you should really be looking at), half that for a 1TB drive and so on.

Can the drive be switched from one DVR to the other without losing what is on the drive.

Yes, you won't be able to play any content, but your Series Links will follow the HDD and they will work.

Yes. Do this by shutting down the external drive, leave the eSATA to eSATA jumper cable in place if you are planning to activate the external device again.

What happens if you get a software update when the external drive is connected? I assume if you disconnect you do not have the update. Thanks!

Nothing different happens if you have an external drive hooked up. You'll still get the update.

I want to add to what Rich wrote...you dont want to be moving the HDD between your dvr's, its not setup for that. Its not at all like Dish's implementation of external HDD's.

You either hook it up to use on one dvr, and decide to move it, and start over on that dvr. You cant really flop one back and forth between dvr's and record content on each different dvr.

I had a working eSata setup (Fantom Green Drive 2TB) w/ my HR24-500 until we upgraded recently to a HR34. We still have the original HR24-500 which recorded all shows on the HD. Now we cannot get either receiver to boot with the external drive on a RBR. All we did was add whole home service and made the HR34 the main receiver in the house and now neither receiver will recognize the external HD. I have searched and cannot find the answer; has anyone else had this issue? I can use the USB and look at the drive reformat etc w/ my computer but receivers do not recognize on a RBR. I have even reformatted the drive and still no luck..............

you should power the DVR off, plug in the drive, power the drive on and wait for it to be ready, then power on the DVR. RBR after connecting it is not a reliable way to do it...

Try this: Unplug the power cords of the HR and the external device. Make sure you have the eSATA to eSATA cable in place. Plug in the external device and let it spin up. Plug in the HR and it should recognize the external drive. Don't use the RBR with an external drive attached to an HR. If that doesn't work, you've probably ruined the chip-set in the external enclosure. At this point, I'd take the Fantom (which people have had problems with) apart and put the Fantom's HDD in a more appropriate enclosure or dock.

@HDTVFan, this is me being patient...

Wow I did not know this. I have had the Fantom for about two years on the HR24-500 w/ no problems and it seemed really quite compared to the HR20-100. I will try this tonight when I get home and report back. Thanks for your patience................

Well I guess I have probably ruined the chip-set in the external enclosure as I could not get the Fantom to boot off either DVR. Thanks

Don't throw it out. Take it apart and find the HDD and get either a Thermaltake BlackX dock or an Antec MX-1 and put the HDD in whichever you choose (I prefer the TT dock, but the MX-1 works well too) and you should be able to keep your recordings. I've done this several times with external devices that didn't work and the HDDs were fine in each case. I also threw several all-in-one eSATAs, such as yours away before it dawned on me that the HDDs might work. Steep learning curve.

Sometimes you get away with doing things you really shouldn't. The RBR is not an option I use. Better to go with the Menu Restart. Much easier on your equipment. My TT docking stations are usually recognized using that method as were the MX-1s I had before I found the docking stations.

Yea I cant decide if it worth getting a dock for a HD that does not have a good reputation. Although the Fantom has not failed me I now know lots of people have had probs. Thanks again for the suggestions.............

No harm in getting another drive, and trying to copy the old Fantom drive over to it if it was just the enclosure or the electronics of the enclosure that went bad.

Don't know what kind of HDDs they use, but I'd try to save it. Again, the enclosures or docks are the weakest part of the chain. The HDD might give you a few years of service.

I purchased a WD20EURS for use with my HR21-100. Do I need to run wdidle with this drive before installing or am I good to go?
