I was setting up some recordings of Dirty Jobs (awesome show!) on the Discovery channel, and I noticed that starting around August 13th, shows were coming up as HD (which they never are in), starting around the 13th or 14th. I can only assume that this is the simucast of discovery as it was also on channel 278, or whatever the regular channel is for the Discovery Channel.
(If I got these numbers wrong, my HD is via projector, and I fire it up just to watch TV/movies- so I'm going off memory here!)
I just recently (arrgh!) found out that my Chicago Comcast Sports was broadcast in HD, but under the exact same channel number as the SD feed! I didn't list it in the Main Favorites list! I missed out on alot of local sports in HD!
I haven't checked other shows yet, I just stumbled upon this by accident prior to retiring for the night. I looked under the settings for my favorites channel guide, and did not see a duplicate channel # for the Discovery Channel yet (ie. -seperate HD channel).

August 13th of 2006? As August 13th of 2007 hasn't happened yet.

The Current Discover Channel is Discovery Home theater...
Which is not the same channel...

Discovery Channel is not yet being broadcasted as an HD channel yet

Well, I set them up to record, in the future!:D , so I guess I will find out then (14th of August 2007). The search showed the shows with the HD icon next to them, and it was on the same channel number as the SD station. there were maybe 4 or 5 seperate shows available, with 1 episode listed twice.
I was curious if anyone else had seen this...

They surely are listed on 278(not that I doubted you :) ) Maybe they are swapping out some bandwidth like they do with MTV ?

Yes, it does show in the future guide as HD on 248 for some of the shows. Maybe a guide error, maybe some bandwith swap. We'll see.

D* does thinks like this just to get the forum buzzing. The HD designators will disappear any time now. It's the same D* pranksters that put the "All-Access" package on the website (and then removed it,) and the same ones who have Sunday's Steelers-Saints game listed as a PPV. They're laughing their butts off at us.

Maybe, maybe not, who knows??

Equipment includes a buncha stuff that I no longer have interest in detailing

No that date is one or 2 days before over on Dish on Aug 15th they are converting voom, to mpeg 4 and also launching discovery channel hd, so perhaps d* allready has it and is just waiting or is expecting to have the new sat ready for their yse by then.

A guide error, I am sure. If Discovery is launching their HD simulcast station on that date, then the information for HD is in the guide data and is incorrectly connected to the SD channel. (This shows up on WETA's sub-channel that is purely SD all the time.)

I'm voting for "guide data error". I have seen this on Fox Sports Midwest channel 647 also where it the guide showed that a Cardinal game was being broadcast in HD (which I believe FSN Midwest was doing) but channel 647 was actually showing the SD broadcast.

The Tribune Co does leave much to be desired, no question. I have seen differences in guide data between SD locals and HD locals for the same show and same time.

I can go along with Data Guide error, I would think that D* would be making some noise about a new HD channel. Besides if they did change channel 278 to HD and you did not have a HD receiver would you be able to receive it on a SD receiver?? If a HD signal could be received on a SD receiver then why is the Hall of Fame game being being broadcast in SD on 212 and HD on 94??

I believe, when they are all done, they will share the same channel numbers, only the H series tuners will see both.

It's just guide data provided by Discovery. The Discovery HD simulcast channel looks to be launching around then (however won't be on DirecTV until a month or so later).

Just like the guide data for my local CBS station shows Wheel of Fortune and Jepordy as "HD" in the guide data but my station doesn't actually show them in HD.

Basically Discovery is just sending out the same guide data for both their SD and HD versions. It obviously won't be in HD unless you are getting the HD version.

Now what this means is great news in that Dirty Jobs and Mythbusters will both be in HD once we get the Discovery HD channel.

I just checked my R15 and HDRV2 downstairs, and set both of them to record Dirty Jobs on Aug 14, 9:00pm, channel 278. It doesn't say HD on either of them (As it shouldn't). Have to see what actually records. I can't picture them just hijacking the Discovery Channel to HD and not offering the SD version.

Comcast Sports Net (chicago) has both the SD and HD feeds on "seperate" channel 640's. i.e.-640 is listed twice in the guide one is SD and the other is HD. So I don't discount that seperate feeds can have the same channel number as it is currently a fact! And no, there isn't a sub channel identifier as in ch 5.1... which is the reason for my lament in the original post.
But it is possible that it is a guide error...
I'll find out in a week...

They won't, there will just be two 278s in the guide on the HD receivers.
