Are all the video outputs on the HR20 hot all the time? Even with some hooked up, others not.
I'm trying to hook up a new Sony DVD recorder to the S-Video output on the HR20 and can't seem to get anything out of it. I have the component video cables hooked to the tv.
No, I haven't tried a different cable yet........

All outputs are on all the time unless the box is in standby mode then are all turned off. I would check all the pins in the S-Video cable to make sure none of them broke off. I have a HDMI to my TV and S-Video to my slingbox with no problems.

I'm doing exactly what you want to do.

HDMI -> TV
S-Video -> DVD Recorder
Composite Video -> Slingbox

Works great. BTW I am super pleased with the DVDs I record from HD material. Still not HD but the best SD you're going to get.
Opinions expressed by me are my own and do not necessarily reflect
those of DBSTalk.com, DIRECTV, DISH, The Signal Group, or any other company.

How are you doing the audio hook up with that?

The HDMI to the TV will take care of the audio to the TV.
Then the HR20 has two audio outputs. One to the DVD recorder and the other set to the slingbox.

I'm using optical out from to the reciever - I'll have to check to see if I have a digital output from there to a DVD recorder - if it will even take it. I'd like to be able to record DD.

Very few if any consumer dvd recorders have digital inputs for audio.

This one says it does - plus HD upconversion - but I wonder if that's the correct price?

Edit: It says Digital "2 channel" recording.

That might be the right price. It says it's a clearance item.
