Hi people,

I just found this website a few weeks ago and it's got lots of great info.

Anyway, I got excited about all the new HD channels coming and started playing with the HR-20 settings and also the settings on my Panasonic TH-42PX60U. Now I can't get it back to the way it was. :nono2: Before, the SD channels would fill the screen and all 4:3 shows on the HD channels would fill the whole screen. Basically, the only time I saw the black vertical bars was when a commercial would come on while watching a HD show. In addition, all the directv menus, and info was alway displayed properly on the screen (nothing being cut off).

I thought I had settings of Native: Off, Screen Format: Stretch, Bar Color: Black, and selected 480p and 720p on the TV Resolutions tab.

On the TV, I believe it was set to either FULL, H-FILL, or JUST. I had to go dig out the TV remote from a drawer, so it's not like I was hitting the ASPECT button to make changes while watching TV. And, I forgot what the FORMAT button did on the DIRECTV remote, so again, I wasn't using it.

If anyone has any suggestions on fixing this, I'd greatly appreciate them.

If you are watching an HD local like fox, and a non-HD program comes on like the news. You will get the side bars regardless of the HR settings. You may be able to use a zoom setting of some type on the tv to fix it, but it is not recommended.

To fill the screen on sd channels use stretch and leave the tv on full.

I don't have a Panasonic TV but I think your TV was doing the scaling for you Try one of the TV scaling settings. It's not possible for the HR20 to change the aspect of an HD signal, just an SD one.
Opinions expressed by me are my own and do not necessarily reflect
those of DBSTalk.com, DIRECTV, DISH, The Signal Group, or any other company.

You're starting to confirm what I was already beginning to believe ... I'm haluscinating (sp?) Everything I've tried to stretch the screen for 4:3 shows on HD channel causes the DirecTv info and menus to be distored/cutoff. I must have become oblivious to the fact that there actually were vertical bars.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my craziness.
