ESPN recently began broadcasting its popular World Series of Poker program
in High-Definition, but the show's host Norman Chad cannot understand why.

"For poker?" Chad asked rhetorically this week in an interview with the Los
Angeles Daily News. "We need to see the queen of hearts in high def? She
looks good even in black and white."

Chad, a former writer for The Washington Post, often delivers biting comments
about the players (and their play) on the poker series. But it appears that his
acerbic barbs go beyond the participants and into the production booth.

"HD would have been great for Neil Armstrong planting a flag on the moon, but
for the flop on a 3-6-10?"

Well, I find it is much easier to read the cards sometimes, especially if the player holds the hole cards at a weird angle and not much light gets to it. I like being able to see the cars and not have to wait for them to put the cards up on the side each time.

DirecTV, please don't make me have to go back to watching March Madness in standard Def! Oh, and the usual begging for AMC and BBC America. You are so close to actually being the HD Leader.

I have noticed a big difference in watching Heads Up Poker on UHD in how well you can see the cards and how distorted the cards can be on the SD channels. I tend to watch WPT more than WSP, but I will follow whoever is offering them in HD. :D

Just about every show SHOULD be done in HD. Poker just shouldn't be televised. :)

Perhaps not, but I do enjoy watching it more than pool, bowling or even golf. All of which I think are stretching it to be called sports.

That's hilarious.
My wife and I recently pondered that same question about Hi-Def Poker.
While neither of us understand poker, we found ourselves watching an entire show 'cause everything looked so darn nice in HDTV. :D :nono2:

I like watching Texas Hold'em. I've learned a lot by watching. But I don't see how anything you can do while eating a sandwich is a sport.

To the contrary, Cap, the simple act of eating a sandwich itself is now considered
by certain fringe crazies to be sport. Then there are the traditional food fights... ;)
