Like they can't afford to buy their own toys.

Here's the info from Swanni: http://www.tvpredict...emmys091307.htm

I've got an idea: why not have DirecTV skip this stupid giveaway and use the money they would have spent on it to lower their subscriber costs or the cost to acquire a new HR20, or something similar?

FAITH: I find the lack of it disturbing.

Opinions are my own but should be those of all Americans, who would be much better off intellectually, psychologically, and emotionally if that were the case.

You do realize that Phillips probably gave them to DirecTV for nothing....

Most of the nomies turn around and give all the stuff they "get", away to local charities and other organizations like that.

This has been going on for years. The gift bags presenters at the Emmys and Oscars get routinely run into the thousands of dollars.

It's the underlying principle, though. As they often say, "image is everything" or "perception is reality."

Hey! I'm a capitalist through and through, but that doesn't mean I can't believe this is just a wasted promotion. ;)

Is there an article I could read that talks about the Nominees charitable giveaways?

There are always going to be marketing and advertising costs.

I'm just cranky because:

-my CE video was not nominated for an Emmy (maybe next year, it was late coming out)
-I'm not invited to the ceremony OR the party
-I just bought a TV and I didn't know they were giving them away.

I have usually only seen it as "statements" on Entertainment Tonight and other shows that talk to some of the high profile nominees....

Especialy at this time of year, when they "detail" the packages.

Also a lot of them are starting to refuse the packages, as IIRC... something change that they now have to pay taxes on the gifts received...

Of course it is... it's all about advertising....
It's not like they care if 200 nominees start subscribe.... but is all the "Free" press that comes along with it, is the goal.

The change is the IRS started reminding the participants that the gift packages are taxable income (always have been) and they had started reaching 10s of thousands of "apparent" value. Gift certificates, even if unused, could be pretty pricey sometimes.

Cheers,
Tom

Earl's right - the IRS now considers the gifts as taxable income.

Noninee: Wow thanks, I'll be sure to hook this up to my cable when I get home.

Why would they give away TV's an NOT HR20's?

I attended the Night of 100 Stars once at the Beverly Hotel...I donated my free "makeover" to Julia Roberts. I figured she needed it more than me.

Seriously, they do have tons of free stuff/gift bags and the vast majority finds its way to charity. The vendors giving the stuff away are hoping that one of the stars will be seen with their products...they were praying I wouldn't.

Like those stars really needed that....

If DirecTV wants to do a constructive promotion, per each nominee they donate $5,000 to a charity organization.

They would have the same public exposure as if they would have give the gift bags to those Hollywood stars.

DirecTV would actually have a cost associated with giving away an HR20. With a Phillips TV, not so much.
