Why are there no HD shows at all in the Guide for the next 12 days to Animal Planet HD?

I hope it is just TMS screwing up.

Better yet would be to leave the damned picture alone and present it in its normal full 4x3 format.

+1, if not +infinite

Why won't they let the user choose?

I see quite a few of the new HD channels that don't seem to have much (if anything like Animal Planet) HD content at all!

Is this an error, or we just have to wait for the content provider to get it together right?

Kind of disappointing to say the least.

Animal Cops Houston looked really good in HD last night.

It wasn't HD. It was upconverted and stretched.

The show at 8PM eastern last night (forgot the name) looked good - it was actual HD.

I watched the same show. Like the earlier episode cited by another poster, it was not in HD. It was upconverted SD. Better than non-upconverted SD, but certainly not HD.

"Good" is a very subjective quality. If you want a standard of comparison to something that actually IS HD, try The Smithsonian Channel HD

Are you sure it was not true HD? I've seen other shows on that channel that are definitely upcoverted as you can tell that it's not 16x9 but instead still has small pillar boxes (I guess they call it 14x9). Whereas that show last night I'm referring to was true 16x9 with no pillar boxes.

Sunrise Earth looked terrible this morning (Friday). It looked like SD. Why even bother when Discovery HD Theater shows the program in all its glory.

It was stretched and upconverted. Stretch-O-Vision, even if it were HD before the stretch, is NOT HD after the stretch. Horizontal resolution is greatly reduced by this process. Not to mention many people--myself included--find the resultant picture unwatchable.

Moreover, what is the point? HD is all about video fidelity. If circles become ovals, and thin people become fat, is that fidelity to the original?

If people want to watch Stretch-O-Vision, let them distort their own display device locally.

Yes, but according to Animal Planet HD, it is not HD.

Animal Planet, at least according to Animal planet does not have a single program in HD, not even Meerkat Manor which we know is secretly HD.

I emailed the Discovery network and they replied that there were unaware of any problem with DIRECTV, that the guide info they forward to DIRECTV does show the HD indicator.

Here is the discovery site to post a message to them:

THIS CHANNEL IN HD IS POINTLESS.

Almost NOTHING is in HD. It is either pillar boxed or stretched 9/10 times.

What a waste.

Anyone notice an audio sync problem? Who should I contact about that? D* or Animal Planet?

He posted this 3 weeks ago.

It is absolutely true that many of the new HD channels have little or no HD content. And the decision they made to zoom and crop SD images to fit a 16:9 screen is, can I say it: STUPID. It not only cuts out a significant portion of the image, but it reduces the resolution to LESS than SD!

Such programs become completely unwatchable on a large screen such as the 102" Carada I project onto.

Long time lurker so thank you all for your messages, insights and suggestions.

Any Natalie Portman fans may want to watch Saving a Species right now. She looks great in HD and her travels in the gorilla forest are not too bad either!!

Enjoy!

Agreed, but the last new ep, The Graduate, had a lot of pop ups for other shows, a la TNT-HD. Don't mess with a good show, APL-HD!

Ceton 6 tuner eth, Cisco Tuning Adapter 1520, TWC Digital Explorer Pak and Standard Internet, TiVo HD (upgraded to 500 GB) for OTA,TC-P50U50, SONY NSZ-GT1 BD player and Google TV box, Yamaha RX-V373 A/V receiver, Squeezebox Duet music streaming device, Xbox 360
