Sunny is shot in SD with prosumer panasonic cameras.

Yeah, as funny as it is, the quality isn't really even full SD. Can I coin the term SD-Lite?

Brand new episode of Damages not in HD. I don't even watch this show but this is disappointing.

Sorry, Stuart, I've been using that for a while to describe super-compressed 480x480 SD.

SD on D* used to be stunning. Better than broadcast as there was no noise. Now, it's mostly swill, down-rezzed then washed out to a smeary mess. So, that's SD-Lite.

So I guess we can assume FX-HD is an upconvert that is in ULTRABETA 3000™ Test Mode at the moment?

As long as they get it going before Nip/Tuck starts I'll be happy.

As someone who does watch the show, it is even more disappointing.

Damages was in SD windowbox tonight. When you launch a new HD channel you think you could show your programs in HD. Especially when you ONLY HAVE FOUR SHOWS on your entire network!

Has any shows been in HD on FX yet?

Any channel that doesn't stretch SD content is OK in my book. The HD programming will come.

Actually, having watched it zoomed on a good HD set, I'm not sure it wasn't a HD source. Now, maybe it was just 480p, but even zoomed it looked VERY VERY good. Better than anything I've ever seen zoomed. No artifacts at all, and fine film grain.

Is it possible that they're just a bit screwed up still, and they took an HD source and windowboxed it? What I saw looked a lot like that.

Highly doubtful. It was probably just very good SD.

It was sad, it airs in HD in canada :( Hopefully we will get the same treatment soon.

Agreed Jeremy. I give them credit for not stretching the crap out of it. Im not a big fan of their programming. I'll tune in, however, for a movie every once in a while.

It was windowboxed all right, so I zoomed it. And was surprised that the PQ, zoomed, was excellent. It is quite possible that for some startup technical reason they windowboxed an HD feed.

It's really not all that possible.

It's the old chicken and egg dilemma. Carriers didn't want to invest in HD because there wasn't that much content yet. Producers of content didn't want to invest in HD because there was no way to carry it yet. We are witnessing the creation of both the chicken and the egg. Be patient. A year from now most of these growing pains will have been forgotten, while we impatiently complain about whatever is next not happening fast enough.
I'm looking forward to Rescue Me.

I think it's possible. Before A&E and History started stretching they used to windowbox some shows that they had showed another time in HD. Plus as others have stated, Damages is aired in HD in Canada so it's definetly shot in HD.

Actually, not exactly true. Many shows have been done HD for some time now. It is a matter of the channels wishing to show the HD stuff or just the SD for now. Or they do what ESPN does with sports. Do a center extraction of the HD signal for SD, but air that on the HD feed until the new HD switchers and stuff arrives and is installed. HD VTRs and servers can be set for center extraction as well as showing the entire 1.78 picture.

I was really disappointed last night when I saw how they were broadcasting Damages. We ended up watching the SD feed. (didn't think of ZOOM :bang )

Sure hope they can get it right for The Shield when that starts up.

Do I dare hope that things will be different when they air the Damages marathon this weekend?

Gosh I hope so. I set it up to record while we're gone so my wife can see a few of the early episodes she missed.

Does anyone now if you have a Series Link set up on the FX SD channel (like for Damages) do we have to take it off and reset it for the new FX HD channel? Or will the HR20 auto switch to the HD channel? Both are listed in the Guide.

You have to re-do it on the HD channel.

Recorded my first HD "Damages" last night and it was shown 16:9, but letterboxed! What's up with that? I'm hopeful it was just due to an engineer forgetting to flip a switch. /steve
