I have an xbox360 which works as an excelent media extender/streamer.
Knowing that I am happy with my media streaming is there any other reason to home network the HR20? I am thinking file transfers, additional storage, exporting AVIs?

You mean besides needing the network connection to get DirecTV on Demand working?

Probably not. :D

The only benefits for having the HR20 networked are Pictures & Music and DOD. You can in no way access the HR20, the HR20 can only access your computer.

DirecTV on Demand. It will let you download selected shows and movies for later playback from your box.

Spanky's networking document is excellent, if you haven't read it you might want to take a minute, he put a lot of work into it.
Opinions expressed by me are my own and do not necessarily reflect

As others have said, DOD is really the only reason. I also have an Xbox360 that I use as my media extender. Compared to what the Xbox360 has the HR20's photo and music capability is buggy and amateurish at best. I am sure that they will eventually have some solid capability but right now it is just not ready for prime time.

If I may add to this post my question:

I used to have a linksys media extender to play streaming (internet radio) audio to my entertainment system. This product is now broken. If I plug my new HD DVR into my network can i stream internet radio to it?

Thanks
