Need help concerning Dish

I am really close to going with Dish I have been a Directv customer since 06. I called them today and they offered me the America's Top 200 (240+) with 3 HD DVR Receivers free installation, free HBO for 1 year and Dish Movie Pack for free for 3 months. Free installation and free activation. Dish Protection Services for 6 months free. Sports Package included until 1/2/18 and a free Amazon Echo.

Some questions I have are as follow:

The equipment with be the Hooper 2 with Joey receivers with sling. I have been reading about the Hooper 3 which is available but there is a one time cost of $53. What would you recommend as far as equipment? Is the Hooper 2 just as good? According to the rep the only real difference is number of tuners 16 to 3.

The Dish Protection Silver plan is it worth $8.99? Anyone had any thoughts?

The sports package will cost me $13 after 1/2/18. Will they discount that price at all if you call them?

Any other thoughts or recommendations would be helpful.

I would consider nothing but a hopper 3 system, from what I have read and know about Dish. Why have three dvrs with stuff spread everywhere when you can have one that is easier to control and does more than the other three combined and is fully accessable at every location? Plus read the complaints on the newer gui. Seems the hopper 3 handles it a lot better.

The Hopper2 with Sling and Joeys that are not the 4K version will not do 4K - so if that is important to you - get the Hopper3 and the 4K Joeys. However, this is not much 4K programming available anyway. The 16 tuners should be more than anyone needs - heck you can probably get by nicely with the Hopper2's 3 tuners (local big4 will share).

The Hopper3 will process the carbon GUI better.

I don't usually get the protection plan - if there is a problem that requires receiver replacement - add it when you need it . There will be 6 month minimum term (I think) for adding it this way to cancel without penalty.

Not usually interested in Sports package, so I can't comment on that.

Other comments -
If you want OTA (for subchannels from local broadcasters) - consider the external OTA dual tuner. OTA is also great for bad weather backup.

It is the upgraded interface the Hoppers use. If I remember Carbon was what it was called during development and the name has stuck.

It works ok on the Hopper2 but it does run slower than on a Hopper3 (the Hopper3 has a faster CPU in the unit). My Hopper2s also seem to have intermittent issues with the new interface with recordings being broken into pieces and lockups that only a reboot will fix. I figure it is 2-3 times per week that I have an issue with the new interface.

If you are going to have 3 tv's, I would think a HWS or Hopper 2 would be tough. You would only have 3 tuners and would run into conflicts quite often. I would call customer service and see what they can do. I know if you ask for a specialist they can probably get you a H3 at no cost if you complain a little, especially if you ar coming over from Direct. Your picture quality will be better with a H3 as well.

I'm also thinking of jumping from DirecTv (DTV). Also, been with them since 2006 but dealing with AT&T has done me in.
You said "....The Dish Protection Silver plan is it worth $8.99? The sports package will cost me $13 after 1/2/18.....". Are there other "hidden" costs. For example, DTV changes $10 for each receiver. Plus, $7 for each additional TV and $3 for Whole House (which you can't drop if you have a Genie DVR). Does Dish have any such extra costs that are not covered in the monthly package charge?

Also, in general, are users pretty much satisfied with Dish? I used to love DTV until AT&T took over.

I too am probably going to switch ( September - end of contract). I was with Dish two years ago and went to Directv. I wasn't as happy with Dish but DTV's prices just keep adding up. Plus I've called three times to cancel the NFL Sunday Ticket and a credit is still not showing on my account. I'm thinking I wasn't THAT unhappy with Dish.

I think if you look hard enough , you can find dissatisfied subscribers of both companies, it's NOTHING like the dissatisafaction of cable customers. But you can also find satisfied subscribers of both companies. I guess what I'm saying is - "don't worry about the crowds, do what is right for YOU".

I had Dish installed yesterday after the last two years with Directv. I'm happy with the install and glad I made the switch. My setup is a Hopper 3 and a wireless Joey. As for picture quality, some channels seem to be a little soft, but as someone else stated, the movie channels appear to be really sharp and I don't notice any difference. Hopper 3 is way ahead of the xx54 Genie. And I'm saving $65 a month for two years to boot.
