    > DirecTV HR20 DVR: 33 watts Something's not right here -- that's a kilowatt in 30 hours, which costs me ten cents. That works out to $2.40 for a month, not the $10 of the referenced article. Does anybody really pay 40 cents per kilowatt-hour? I can't really get excited up about less than...

Why would the TiVo folks care if you posted pictures of their booth bunnies? :D
  3. DIRECTV General Discussion
That's not good news. Trick play on the SD TiVo is quite poorly done; it works, but has lots of glitches (like as not, hitting the "back" button actually jumps *forward*). I was rather anticipating improvement in this area; it sounds as though I may be disappointed.

Not FUD at all, but direct observation of the content of this very website. I quite realize that TiVo is not the *only* answer, but TiVo has suggestions, which is a feature I find quite worthwhile, along with a comprehensive set of wishlist capabilities. It would take a lot more than something...

Let me just add my voice to those who will be perfectly happy with a DirecTiVo unit that does nothing more than the old SD units do. I've been holding off on HD just waiting for them. I switched to D* from E* because the E* units I had were buggy and problem-filled. The E* forums here were...
  6. DIRECTV HD DVR/Receiver Discussion
I was a Dish customer almost from the beginning, and for many years, before finally switching to DirecTV because I just couldn't put up with Dish's buggy receivers any longer. In those old DirecTIVO days before the HR21 series, it was painfully obvious right here on this site that the Dish...

I'm also in the "like suggestions" camp; I've never understood the folks who don't. The feature is essentially invisible (except for the red recording light). Personally, I'd rather have the disk full of stuff I might potentially be interested in watching rather than just sitting there...

Thanks to all for the help. If I want to add an HR2x to my DirecTiVo SD unit, it sounds to me as though I should get one of the new slimline dishes, run two more cables from the dish, plug in an SWM-8 to the (now) four dish cables, and then split the SWM-8 output to the 4 tuner inputs (two on...

You may be thinking of things like network series here; the value of "suggestions" to me is in catching one-off shows on, say, the Science channel or the History channel, etc., not recurring series shows. I watch essentially *no* network TV. The direct answer to your question is "yes, it...

In a post you doubtless hadn't seen yet, I mentioned that I'd probably be doing just that. In the post you responded to, I did mention a thought I had that might help resolve some reliability problems, but as you point out, I'm certainly not in a position to provide an independent assessment of...

That was a bit quick for me ... There are 3 LNBs and even or odd transponders -- that's 6 combinations. But the voltage/tone system gives just 4 combinations. How can that work? If the voltage/tone combinations select one LNB and even or odd transponders, then what goes on with two (or four...

I hope you're right about that. I'd be quite happy living with my SD units for that long. I can then add an HD unit and evaluate its utility in my own setup. Thanks. Terry (astrotrf)

Mike (and everyone else): thanks for taking the time to reply. I appreciate your willingness to answer questions, and I'll save all this. But I'd still like to find out where you learn about all of these things. (I'm used to answering questions from others, not having to ask questions like a...

Well, maybe, but Doug thinks MPEG2 will be around longer than it will take my DirecTivo units to bite the dust. Maybe I should start backing up some of the permanently-stored programs ... :) Terry (astrotrf)

Regardless of the EULA, there are "implied warrantees of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose" which cannot be universally disclaimed. You're paying DirecTV for a service that includes the software for the box. DirecTV is making certain promises in exchange for your money (else...

I've heard the year 2011 bandied about as the time all of the MPEG2 stuff will be shut off in favor of MPEG4. I don't know whether that's anything more than a rumor at this time, but if true, it means I have to start casting about for alternatives in just another couple of years. But I agree...
  17. DIRECTV HD DVR/Receiver Discussion
I just posted a rather elementary question in another thread. It made me realize that I don't really know anything about DirecTV equipment setup beyond "aim a dish and cable up a receiver". Other folks freely toss around terms like SWM-8, WB68, D11, D12, power-passing splitters, multiswitches...

I agree that class-action suits are a huge waste of time. Even if you win, what you'll probably get out of the settlement will be two coupons for $5 applicable toward pay-per-view movies. (What you *should* get, of course, is a DirecTV commitment to hire programmers that actually know how to...

veryoldschool's question was rhetorical, but I don't mind revealing my ignorance (whilst struggling to hide my stupidity :D) by asking the same question for real. What can you do with an HTPC? Can you feed an HDMI output into an HTPC and watch it live, with trick play? Or have the HTPC record...

I don't follow how this went from "a series of custom-built reflectors", NASA scientist, curvature with lots and lots of math, etc., to a simple large flat metal surface set at a particular angle, but in any case, the flat metal surface idea could be made to work. Since the wavelength of the...
