AT&T: American Telephone and Television. The "Telegraph" part of AT&T is obsolete anyway.

The screen says reboot may fix it. I assume you tried to reboot several times before giving up.

But the same problem exists with the internal drive. If the DVR dies the recordings can't be played back anymore, whether you use internal or external. I agree, that would be cool feature.

You can use it with another DVR, no need to reformat. It even keeps the season passes. But the previously recorded shows are tied to the old DVR and won't play back, so you have to delete those manually.

We have had several threads like since the 2Fx releases. D* should use uppercase characters to avoid this confusion (not that it matters much since most users never look at this stuff).

I would worry about the failed test. These are SMART short/long self tests, so if it fails it's the eSATA itself that's running the test and reporting a failure. So there is some issue with the disk.

It works by hitting SELECT on the remote too. Or at least it did the one time I tried.

But the same is true for a replaced internal drive. If you load up the new internal disk with programs and then it takes a dump, you are on your own.

I reported this in one of the CE releases. It's the "Software download" entry that's cause of the problem. That one doesn't get highlighted when selected and it causes some issues.
  10. DIRECTV HD DVR/Receiver Discussion
I think it only the downloads that are pushed to your receiver (like a national release) are listed in history. The downloads that are forced (which is the case for CE releases) aren't there.

yeah, sure, the STB software could be changed to avoid this problem, but my point was that since all types of STBs were affected then most likely they were behaving according to the specification and they should not take the blame for this. And this kind of fix is probably easier said than done...

Based on the evidence in this thread I agree with your assessment. I don't think this particular problem can be blamed on the software running on the various STBs. The part that sends the date & time information over the satellite is to blame.

Definitely use menu reset if the receiver is not locked up. RBR, like any hard reset, can cause corruption on the hard disk, which could lead to loss of recordings.

This problem didn't affect me as I wasn't watching TV or recording anything last night. Date & time may have changed on my STBs and then corrected later, but I have no way of knowing if it happened. Reading the posts in this thread the problem doesn't seem to be receiver related as some Rxx...

HR2x dvrs do resume recordings after a reboot (mine once rebooted due to a power outage and it resumed recording after the reboot). I am not sure why it didn't happen for the OP.
  16. DIRECTV HD DVR/Receiver Discussion
It's not. I am constantly switching between external and internal drives and it has never reformatted either.

During boot time there is a screen that says "running receiver self-check". Hit the SELECT button on the remote when this screen shows up and it takes you to a diagnostics screen. Select "advanced tests", then "utilities", and then "hard drive utilities". There are several choices like "short...

The new diagnostics feature they added to the HRxx boxes recently has a repair hard disk option (that takes quite a while to run), so that one may do this bad sector stuff.

I am curious to see if all HR21-100 owners are seeing this or not. I don't have a HR21-100 so I can't try it, but I think there are a few people here who have the HR21-100 + eSATA setup and this is the first I have heard of this reformat at every reboot problem.

I agree with this. It has nothing to do with a specific version of software. It's the very act of rebooting the set top box that can cause the problem (though fortunately it has never happened with my system).
