Recently DTV changed many of the Spanish channels from 4:3 stretched to 16:9 with letterbox to 16:9 but still SD. The on-screen guide lists TyC has HD but the channel is clearly not HD. For some reason GolTV was not included in this change to 16:9 and remains a horrible looking SD channel. Does anyone know why certain channels were changed to 16:9 and others were not?

I doubt it was Directv doing this. Probably the channel itself changed, either going to 16:9 SD in some cases or going to HD only in other cases but Directv doesn't have a contract to carry them in HD.

This started happening years ago, e.g. when ESPN went HD only so Directv and cable providers carrying it in SD all carry it letterboxed.

Directv already would have if they hadn't found they had some contracts that required them to keep it around. Not MPEG2 specifically I assume, but certain packages of channels that have to be available to customers using Ku only (likely for footprint reasons for the offshore oil rigs, and for prohibitive retrofit cost for aircraft)

GolTV is HD but DTV does not show the channel in HD. I don't know if Peru Magico is HD, NTEL is not HD, and TyC is HD. None of these are HD on DTV and all are 16:9 except GolTV.
