The way Directv is implementing 4K it will require two tuners per 4K channel (two transponders will be bonded to carry three 4K channels) They aren't doing that yet, but have designed things with that in mind.

Thus you have the HS17 which has 16 tuners, subtract one for the SWM guide channel leaving 15, can only support 7 "tuners" when someday all of them are 4K capable. It could support more TVs now, but people would be pretty unhappy if it supported 11 TVs and then the next model 9 and the next model 7, so they have set the limit at 7 where the ultimate limit will be.

Building it with expansion slots less than 1% of customers would use would be wasteful. If/when they decide to support customers with more than 7 TVs on the Genie 2 platform - which unless they change things is their future direction - will be through allowing more than per account. That would be FAR cheaper than making them expandable. And no matter how expandable they make them, it won't be enough for someone.

We all know where the future with this is going and it's not Satellite. Eventually streaming through an AT&T infrastructure (5G probably) will be the answer, and the number of streams will be whatever the capacity of your bandwidth is. This is the future, and I really question how much more money AT&T is going to throw at Satellite. Their bread and butter is in the mobile platform.

For now, just keep in mind you can’t do two streams at the same time from two different C61K’s fed from the same HR54, but then again there’s not a lot of content to always warrant it.

But, take one C61K, and from that IRD, you can watch a recorded 4K program in your playlist while the HR54 is recording another 4K program. You can toggle between those programs, from that C61K. I will not get rid of all my other HD DVR’s.

I can’t get a straight answer from the useless Directv “Techs”.

    I currently have an HR44, 3 HR24s, an H24 and a C41. 11 available timers for recording/watching.

If I switch to the HS17 and six minis, I understand that I’m now limited to recording only on the HS17 tuners. But, how many tuners is that? CSRs keep telling me 11 in the server and that the wired minis each have one “built in” tuner for viewing only.

Only one of my TVs is currently 4K.

What is the actual answer here?

The HS17 has 7 tuners that serve both live viewing and recording. If you are recording 7 things, then your clients can still watch either (a) something that is currently being recorded or (b) something previously recorded, but they can't watch an 8th live stream. If you are watching 4 live TV shows on 4 clients, then you can still record 3 things.

Correct, they use a tuner from the Genie.

Wow. That’s a big hit. I’d go from 11 DVR tuners plus a regular tuner down to 7

Unfortunately they are really pushing the HS17. Making it very difficult to get a HR54.

And am I correct that the HR44 is not 4K compatible?

If you're not using all that equipment at the same time, then the HS 17 might work.

But if you've got a full house and need more than 7 tuners, insist that you won't except the HS17 and that they upgrade you to the 54. Swap the 44 with the 54 and replace the C41 with a C61K which goes on your 4K TV.
