Streaming is all well and good if you watch a game in real time, but a lot of us don't. For instance I did not watch Saturday's Caps Rangers game until 7:30. NBC's love of golf has forced the cut away from games only to have them moved to Versus so when I set it to record I also set a recording to start at (I think) 3PM on Versus in case the game went into OT.

Can somebody explain (or link me to an explanation) of the blackout rules - both for the NHL regular season and playoffs (if the rules are different) and other sports?

I guess the good thing about not being in a market with an NHL team is I never get blacked out, but I definitely feel for you guys who are getting blacked out, especially during the damn playoffs!

For some stupid reason I always thought the only reason a game gets blacked out is if it didn't sell out, but obviously that's not that case.

    Thanks for any clarification.

I need some kind of explanation of blackout rules as well. I live in a market without an NHL team but get screwed anyway. Here is why:

First, I have subscribed to NHLCI since 1996.

I live in the Cleveland market. No NHL since 1978. But, because the Columbus Blue Jackets are on FS Ohio, their games are often pre-empted because of Cleveland Cavaliers games. One would think that I would either be able to get the other team's feed or that I would get the feed which goes to people living downstate. But...despite many letters and calls to DTV, the Blue Jackets and NHL (does FSN even have actual humans to complain to?) there has been no change.

However, I discovered that if I subscribe to Sports Pack, I am able to watch the Jackets' games on FS Cincy, still blacked out from opposing feed. So, I am basically paying extra to watch one team's games. I wouldn't bother except that the conflict happens very frequently as if the two teams agreed to play on the same nights!

Supposedly FSN will be using a third channel for the playoffs but we'll see. And we'll see if it shows up on DTV.

Why a basketball team's games should control which hockey games I see is beyond me, but that is the story.

On top of this, every spring we lose most of the NBC Sunday playoff games due to our local NBC affiliate's Sunday afternoon telecasts of Indians baseball.

My particular situation last night, it wasn't even a blackout issue, it was total screw up on Directv's end. The Canes are my home team and FSN-CR is my RSN, so it should never have been "off-air" at all. Technically when you get blacked out, the screen reads "Channel not purchased" or it will say "This game in not available in your area" and then search for another channel showing the game.

Some of the blackouts problems people are having, I can't seem to comprehend myself. (Such as the Flyers issues). I think that's a local tv problem. But for the most part you have to watch your "Home" team on your local RSN. Everything else "should" be able to be seen on the Center Ice package.

That's right. Last night's issue had nothing to do with a blackout. It was a timing thing. Like Heidi, only instead of Heidi they switched to the Directv logo!

It sounds like the Cavs have priority on your network. (I may be wrong?) It could be the Jackets didn't get the best deal with the network and Cavs games have to be seen in their entirety before they start the hockey game. Hopefully they will add a second channel for the playoffs for you guys so you won't that the conflict.

We are familiar with sorry FSN deals here in Carolina with the Canes.

We had to write letter to the newspapers, the Hurricanes and FSN just to get one game broadcast on HD. (that was the one last night, that D* screwed up). Up until they added that game, we were the only team in the NHL playoffs without a playoff game broadcast in HD. 3 years removed from a Cup and we maybe have the worst TV contract in the NHL.

I was wondering why no Canes games were in HD. You're probably right about the Cleveland thing, although I find it interesting that I get the same games through Cincy by buying sports pak. (Shhh. They might take that away too.)

Tonight on Versus they are showing Rangers Caps at 7 followed by Hawks and Flames at 9:30. If Rangers and Caps go into overtime there is no way to watch it. It should at least be on Center Ice.

And while I'm at it WHY are we not getting CBC or TSN dual feeds for Canadian teams. I'm very tired of the second rate DireTV service.

Tonight both the Devils-Hurricanes and Canucks-Blues games will not be in HD. Canucks-Blues will be in HD on Versus but joined with less than an hour to go. Why is there so little HD? And if the Canucks-Blues goes to OT, then we will miss the beginning of the Sharks-Ducks game. So stupid!

Here's what I'm angry about tonight.

When we get VS coverage of the end of the Vancouver - St. Louis game, we will get the HD CBC feed, even though we're stuck with the SD CBC feed on CI.

And CBC has no Coach's Corner tonight, either!!!

Trying to figure out why I'm getting a 727 error for the Canucks - Blues on Vs ??????????

Oh wait even better it's only the HD feed!!!!

What is the deal with the NHL on DirecTV??? If you don't care about it, don't bother at all, or at least give us a discount on the CI package... because your version SUCKs

    You're not missing anything.

Van - St.L 3rd period has started, but VS is showing Caps highlights from last night.

    Nice.

What do you expect from a third rate sports network?? And the NHL wonders why it doesn't get better ratings in the US:nono2:

Flyers game is over on VS over 45 minutes ago and Philly market is still blacked out of the Vancouver game. If the SJ game doesn't come on at 10:30 I'm going to blow a piston.

Can't wait until the Flyers are out of the stinking playoffs so we no longer have to deal with this. That's what you get when the NHL leaves ESPN for the Philadelphia owned Comcast "Versus" network.:mad::mad:

Can't be soon enough for me!

BTW it's only the hD feed that's blacked out.

I have SD duplicates on DVR removed. I switched it "show duplicate SD channel" but now all SD are back except VS what is with that.
