I called today just to see what would happen. I went through the routine of 'cancel service' and got to a live female CSR.
I've been a customer since 2003. I asked about the free Sunday Ticket offer I kept seeing on their website and on TV and wanted a clarification if I qualified for it. She told me no and gave me the normal price.
I said - that's too bad because I couldn't afford it. She sympathized with me and after a pause offered half-price. I nearly jumped on that but hesitated and said I really couldn't afford that either being from the Northeast and had to worry about heating my home. Again she sympathized with me.
At that point there was a very very long pause when neither of us said anything then she told me she was checking something. So after another extremely long silent wait she said - "Good news. This is your lucky day. I wanted to see if I could enter it and it let me. I can give it to you for free."
Of course I thanked her profusely and she told me enjoy. (She did ask me my favorite team at the start of the conversation.)
I checked my account and Sunday Ticket is showing up as $0.00.
    So I am quite pleased.

Been lurking this thread for a while and tonight I figured I would give it a go. First offer from the CSR was for the Sunday Ticket at half price. I explained (very nicely) that FIOS recently started up in my neighborhood and that I didnt want to leave DTV, but that FIOS has very appealing bundles. She then said she would be able to give me the ST for free. Also ended up getting $10 off for 12 months. I honestly didnt think I would get that good of a deal. My favorite team plays in my market, but I'm a huge football fan and will enjoy catching other games. Escpecially the Red Zone channel.

Just called for the 3rd time to see if I could get any ST deal. The first 2 calls were not productive. But this time, after getting through him saying that I could get the early bird off or 50 off that, he gave it to me for $7 a month. Plus I got the obligatory 3 months free for HBO, which is fine with me. I wish I would have got his name, but I must say he went out of his way to make something happen. Continued very happy DirecTV customer.

I called and got the $20 off for 6 months thing (same deal I got last year), which will work out to $203.94 instead of $323.94. I'll take it. It was a 8 minute, hassle-free, transaction.

Don't be afraid to call again and ask about getting it free. I have called 4 different times and got something each time.

    1. Called asking for it free. Said they couldn't do that deal but could offer me $10 off for 12 months. I didn't accept it, but the CSR gave it to me anyway.

    2. Called the next day. The CSR gave me a $125 credit.

    3. Called a week later to activate a new DVR. Figured I could ask the frontline CSR if they could offer me ST for free. She couldn't but gave me a $5/mo credit for 12 months and 3 mos free Showtime.

    4. I called yesterday on a whim just to see what I could get. Figured all they could do is say no. I asked about getting ST free and the retention CSR said he couldn't do that but he could get me $20/mo off for 6 months.

So I got $425 off just by calling multiple times. I've thought about calling again, but don't want to push my luck. Plus I want to order NHL CI, so I'll call back then when they start offering it.

Premiere customer since 1999. Sunday Ticket every year. Called to cancel. Offer 60 credit refused. Then offered a $120 credit. Refused. They wouldn't make any further offers. So I cancelled. I can live without Sunday Ticket. It will be nice to have my bill be under $150 a month.

This what I received last week when I called and took it. The past 2 years this is the deal I received and I'm happy.

I called back and they offered me the same deal as described above. I told them about how others were getting it for free and the rep said the deals they give for the Sunday Ticket are strictly based on longevity and if your account is in good standing. He said the computer would not let him give me a better deal. I signed up for it. I'm going to call back in a few weeks since they still would not throw in the To Go for free.

I got a call yesterday with what sounded like a pretty good deal, although I didn't take it. The CSR was talking so fast it was hard to figure out exactly what it was, but it sounded like:

Premier plus ST for 5 months at the price of Choice Ultimate (I currently have TC+).

He caught me at a bad time (I wasn't feeling too well) so I said no, but later wished I would have verified the details, if indeed it was what I thought I heard.

WooHoo! Free ST for me. Called this AM using wylie73's guidelines and talked with female CSR. After about 5 mins of chit-chat about favorite teams, etc., she asked if I was looking to get ST for free and of course I jumped on it.
Thanks to all who contributed to this thread and especially wylie73. :D

So over the past few weeks I've called several times. The first time they gave me 20x12. Thought $240 was a good deal. Then realized that discount was a $20 total choice dos punt and not a ST discount. So I called again and got a $75 deal for paying one payment. She also gave me a free HDDVR. Just called again and stated I've already paid and now I see people getting it free. She gave me a Extra $168 credit. This year they are going all out with discounts.

Yes, all the providers are losing subs like crazy. Bills are too damn high. I just put up an OTA antenna, and got a Roku with Netflix to see how much we really need a TV service. Unfortunately I'm retired and a news junkie and sports fan so without ESPN, NFL Net, Comcast Sports Net. CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, HLN, etc., giving up DirecrTV would be tough. We need al a carte programming.

Remember folks, I posted in the other thread about this very topic.

Everyone will NOT get the same deals. Unfortunately, this is the real world.

As I stated in the other thread, there are several factors that determine just what kind of deal you might be able to get.

What many don't realize is that each CSR has a bank of credits or money to allocate. Once that is depleted, they cannot give out anything else, or once it is down to a certain amount, they can't give you over what they have left in their banks.

Another part are the Supervisors. Since the CSR's are part of a team which is under a supervisor, those teams are graded, and in the retention department, one thing they are graded on is "saves". Believe me, CSR's are rewarded for each "save".

If a Supervisor want more saves, they will inform their CSR's to be more generous with their banks. If they want to better their bottom line as to how much their CSR's are giving out, then they inform the CSR's to give out less credit.

This is why it pays to call several times because you never know the status of a given CSR or their team.

Do not call on the weekend. Typical CSR banks run dry by the end of the week. Call on Monday or Tuesday.

It took me two calls, but I got two credits which amounted to 370 dollars, so ST is free for me.

As someone else stated, longevity, loyalty, and current account status plays a HUGE role in what you will get along with how many credits you are currently using.

I called today and stated I was going to cancel and talked for a few minutes and ended up with free ST and another $10 credit per month. I was credited the first installment I had already paid on ST and it shows on my account exactly what was discussed.

my 4th call over the past week got it. i said "cancel" at the prompts for the 3rd and 4th calls, as suggested. the very nice guy (albert in tx), put me on hold and came back asking if i'd gotten st free in the past. since i got the premier/st promo pkg last year, i had to say that i had gotten it included in a promotion before. since we've been with them since '96, he gave it to us again.
