We recently subscribed to MLB.TV via the iTunes app and have been watchin on Apple TV. We're having DirecTV installed next week. Any way to use the MLB.TV credentials from the app to watch the MLB channels on DirecTV? I'm guessing that the answer is "no", but I thought I'd ask, just in case!

    Hi, C S.

    Your guess is correct.

If you buy Extra Innings on DIrecTV, you get MLB.tv included.

If you buy MLB.tv, you do NOT get EI.

After you get DIrecTV hooked up, do a pic comparison of MLB.tv versus any MLB Network game on 213.

I think you'll be surprised how good the PQ of MLB.tv has become, assuming you have a good internet connection.

    Good luck with DirecTV!

    Cheers,
    cmasia

I had that problem, blacked out of video on mobile devices. I finally had to put in a new credit card number at MLB. They didnt charge me, but they use it to figure out where you are, so they know what to blackout for you.

Today - Wednesday - the Reds are hosting the Rockies.

Neither team is televising today, but MLBN has a full production telecast, using Reds radio for audio, on their Alt channel 213-1.
The Alt channel is open to subscribers in Chicago and St. Louis.

Yet the game was not made available on MLB EI or the the Game Mix channel.

    It is live on MLB.tv.

I don't recall this happening before and I'm wondering why this is not on EI when DirecTV could have just re-mapped 213-1.

    Any thoughts?

By the way, the game just ended.

That's not how the blackouts work. They use geo-location of your IP address and/or the GPS location of your mobile device.

MLB EI only includes telecasts by the teams, plus regional games from FOX. The telecast on MLB Network Alternate was neither, so it was not eligible for EI.

MLB.TV provides all games, including those not televised by the teams. If there is no TV, you get the radio broadcast plus visuals from the ballpark.

It is this feed that MLB Network used on their alternate channel for the Rockies/Reds game. It was made available in at least the Rockies market since there was no local TV of the game. I presume the Reds market also had access to the feed, but I don't know that for a fact.

Long story short, MLB.TV provides access to some perks you don't get from EI alone, which is why it is great that the two packages are linked together when you subscribe to EI (provided the link works properly).

Generally you're correct, however if you feel you are being incorrectly blacked out, the credit card billing address is a tool that MLB CS reps use to place you. Happened to me a couple years ago.

All I know was all the games were coming in on Directv, but on all my mobile devices I was getting blacked out on every game I tried to watch. Tried for two days. Finally was able to get a form to update my credit card with MLB, and was able to see everything on mobile.

The nitpick in me is going to tell you that it is not actually a VPN, since it is not tunneling all traffic (check out the latest Security Now podcast for details). Still, it does obfuscate the IP address for traffic that does get rerouted, so...

Looks like the free GameMix for non-subscribers has finally been blacked out. At least, it was blacked out for me when I tuned in this weekend.

I'm not complaining -- it was a freebie that I assume we weren't supposed to have for the last year-plus. But it's noteworthy.
