Well the last couple days have been alright with this 3rd one. I didn't even check the firmware version because I was just so happy it was working enough for me to use it.

Of course this one came with an obsolete card and it took 30 minutes on the phone to get someone to let me use my old card from the broken unit instead of having to wait for them to send me a new one. I swear... nothing is easy with Directv is it?

Except... this morning... the unit looked off... went to turn it on and nothing. The power button even had a faint glow... then the resolutions lights flashed and all the lights turned off.

    I was kinda furious.

The last unit's HDMI port was dead... so I did my usual composite hook up to the side of the TV to verify a picture and still nothing. I was about ready to blow my top. The hard drive was disking... I could hear it... something was going on but nothing was lit up on the front.

So I did what any man would do to a seemingly unresponsive box of electronics... SMACK IT. Lo and behold... it comes to life... what the hell? It was at the end of downloading sat info or whatever and everything was back to normal.

This is beyond stupid. The worst part is I have no option for a refund or cancelation except to take Directv to arbitration. The last rep I talked to said it's "within their right" to rectify any problems with their service. Are they that hard up for money that they don't mind FORCING people to put up with bad products?

I hope this was a fluke. If this unit is bad all I can do is get a 4th HR20 and pray. My "compensation" of $10 a month off my bill for a year was a nice gesture to start out with but I don't know how much longer it will be satisfactory.

I can appreciate your "old school" tech approach to fix it. This could either be a coincidence or a sign you have a loose connector inside.
Since you're on your fourth unit, you might try being transfered to retention and tell them. I [maybe lucking] did this and they decided to have a new [not refurb] box sent out to me. I had to wait until their installer could bring it out, which took a month, but I have a NEW box. FWIW :)
