If you want to watch 4K programming, then you need the 54 with a C61K or a 54 and an RVU TV. Either combo with costs and extra $7 per month (unless you swap out an existing device for the 61K or RVU).

You also have to subscribe to the Ultimate or Premiere DIRECTV packages.

Well yeah. DIRECTV is a business. In business the name of the game is profits.

If you activate your 4K RVU TV without an HR54, you will still get access to channel 1102 which is DIRECTV's 4K Video on Demand.

Directv has new hardware coming "soon" that will provide a better 4K solution. How soon is anyone's guess, but probably the first half of next year. Since there is almost no 4K programming currently, I'd wait to upgrade until that arrives and there is more to watch.

You need to call DIRECTV to add your RVU TV to your account. Thus will cost you $7.00 a month.

    On what TV?

Did you activate the RVU TV with DIRECTV?

If you did, you need to make sure that DIRECTV actually entered the correct series of your TV, for example 2016 Samsung 4K

Also once activated it can take a couple of hours for 1102 to populate.

Just so everybody knows AT&T and DirecTV or working on a new 8K 4K HD Gateway since the 8K televisions will be coming out in 2020 so they'll be ready for the 2020 Summer Olympics which will be in Tokyo Japan

A headless server gateway like the HS17 is automatically "8K ready" just like a Genie HR54 that could only output HD was "4K ready" as a gateway because it could pass the bits along to something capable of displaying it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say whoever told you Directv is working on an 8K solution that soon (if ever) is full of it. Yes Japan is pushing to do 8K in time for the Olympics because it will be there, but I'll eat my keyboard if Directv broadcasts the 2020 Olympics in 8K.

You'll probably have to lease a car from D* to get 8K. :p (I keep hoping for more smilies...)
