So far the 4K olympics has been pretty useless, it’s all the same stuff repeated from NBC the night before, nothing on the 4K channel is live.

I agree, pretty lame IMO. The stuff on the standard NBC channel is already old enough. 4k stuff almost 2 days old. Too bad, pretty good picture.

This is not just a DirecTV thing, I believe this is the same across the other platforms- none of the 4K programming is live- it’s running on a 24hr relay.

It’s nice to have options like 4K, and I don’t have the time to watch everything live so it’s no big deal to me. It’s better to have the option than nothing at all.....

That was expected. I think this is an experiment for the networks to see how to best implement 4k in this type of situation. The feed is actually from the NHK (Japanese network) so there are some rights issues in play.

For me, it's fun to see how it looks in 4k and I'm not using the channel to watch live events but just to see the events IN 4k, even after the fact. If you watched the OC in 4k they were stunning!

To have the 4K along with Dolby Atmos sound has given the Olympics a new dimension. The skating was wonderful in 4k and the sound was spectacular.

To me this is the next step in the evolution of TV. I remember being "wow"ed by stereo sound on my TV in the 1980s. Then when HD with Dolby Digital sound came out......awesome. Couldn't stop watching the few channels I had that got that (especially HDNet and whatever MTV Live was called). But that's now 10 years ago. Streaming TV has passed "channels" in both picture quality and sound, (with the exception, oddly, of the network streaming channels, which are still using stereo...WTF!). Now imagine your TV filled with 4k content and Dolby Atmos sound!! Obviously most people will not have the ability to hear Atmos at this time, but even without having Atmos the sound quality improves.

I have 2 Atmos bounch speakers aimed at the ceiling, next best thing if you are not able to do a ceiling mount.

bounced sound from a ceiling ...
would it providing 20% of that sound picture what speakers radiating from the ceiling ?

I'm looking at my pitched (14' to 10' from left-to-right of the wall with TV) non-flat (with nice looking wooden studs) ceiling ... no way to install speakers there nor get Atmos bouncing sound.

Most people don't even have a 5.1 setup, Atmos will forever remain a niche within a niche.

I turned on 106 around 8:30 PM local time here just to see what they looked like even if they are on a day delay. All I got was a DTV logo and info said they were on from 12:00 - 8:00 PM. OK then.

There was a hockey game on after the ice skating and it really showed the Dolby Atmos sound off. It was almost like being in the arena.

I'm still hearing some squeaks and things like that. Are you hearing that? I do hear some pretty impressive sound despite that.
