I can't imagine the rationale that would enable multiple Genies, but not allow an HD receiver (note - not DVR) when you get an HS17. It's madness.

It has more to do with do away of having to support older Hardware - or just Business

...but multiple Genies means supporting a more complex setup that only impacts older hardware? It's doubly bad, and truly niche.

Right - you're missing my point.

My point was that they are coding for a scenario where they're going to have multiple legacy DVRs. That's insane, given that they not only won't allow for an HD receiver with an HS17, but they will remove it (and give you a new client at some cost) to "simplify things."

These 2 positions don't make sense, when looked at together. Either eliminate multiple DVRs by enforcing HS17/client installs, or allow for receivers as "clients," at less impact and cost.

I understand your point however from a business plan at some point they will no longer need to support older hardware or seek mfg replacements as customer churn and equipment fails are not replaced.

...then why even think about coding for 2 genies? It doesn't make sense...

Agreed. If they want to have a common interface across satellite and streaming platforms they don't want to inherit the limitations of obsolete H2x/HR2x hardware.

Whatever their reasons, it was a business decision not to allow other hardware on an account with an HS17. It was a business decision not to make the software changes necessary to properly support multiple Genies on an account. So, either one of those has to give or they have to abandon all higher end customers. And make no mistake limiting to them to the HR54, which supports only one 4K TV, would effectively be abandonment down the road when multiple real 4K channels arrive - even if they can still add as many ever more outdated H2x and HR2x boxes as they want to support an unlimited number of TVs.

Have just started investigating RVU. Is initial authorization different than re-authorization or just a dreaded CSR phone call for either? I don't believe I have DECA. I have an HR54 and various other HR's all hard wired Cat6. Would that be the non-supported hook up?

If you want Dolby Atmos then RVU is out and you need a mini.

RVU -requires a Service Visit to Activate - (ONE) draw back is replace the 4k TV for any reason and you will need to re activate a NEW TV - GET a C61K - remove the TV and just reconnect the hdmi cable.

Call and as for a 4k upgrade -That will get you a NEW RB LNB installed as well

Thanks, last October I had an HR34 replaced with the HR54 on PP. I let the installer talk me into a C61K. It was a mess. A couple of weeks and two callbacks they got it working? Audio/video dropouts were horrible. Sent the C61K back and have been on the sidelines ever since. I was hoping to "easily" audition 4K during the Olympics w/o a $ervice Visit. I'll wait for more content availability.

I been using a Hr54 with a RB LNB & C61K-Self installed- since 5/17 - everyone that had audio drops I stopped that by disabling dolby in the C61K - in late May or early June they released a updated firm ware that fixed the audio drop - and I've been using Dolby & now Dolby Atoms ever since.

I under stand waiting for more content

Just an update. I decided to try out RVU using my Samsung KS8000 and am very happy with the results. All I did was run a cat 6 cable direct from the router to the tv and follow the prompts. The performance of the RVU is not a serious drop off from the C61K and I am now getting HLG and apparently the TV has completely taken over upscaling. Perhaps something has happened over time to improve the performance of RVU?

Now my biggest question is if I should call Directv and tell them I don't need their C61K or if I should just leave well enough alone?

If you can afford pay twice ( RVU and the client's fee $7 fee), why not ?

The fee we pay each month no longer says "lease" for the receivers. It now says watch on X number of TVs.
I would leave well enough alone as long as you do not put the c61k in service at the same time the RVU TV is online.

Did you find a way to set the aspect ratio to "screen fit"? That's one thing I never found and hated missing some of the screen image.
