Rich and all the others, thank you for your service!

Like Carl above, I just remember the fear in my mother's eyes and storing gallon jugs of water. It was a dreadful few days.

And I do have the program scheduled to record.

Another thank you to everybody who served!

I was too young at the time to realize what was going on, all I remember of that era was crying my eyes out when Kennedy was assassinated. Now for the funny part (in hindsight) , I was not crying about Kennedy as that meant nothing to a 4 year old but because of the news coverage none of my cartoons were on

They did have a few frames of that hull number shown.

The follow-up program 'Secrets of the dead' was also good. It's amazing that the Russian subs had a nuke on board!

I saw it on the show before the one about the sub commander. No mention of it in the show about the sub commander. I know the secret equipment we had on board was mentioned in that hideous book "October Fury", so I guess it's alright to talk about it, but I feel kinda funny doing it.

Let me just say this: When the program mentioned the "magic" a sub could do by hiding under a thermal layer they didn't tell the whole story. Our ship could see them. We were the only destroyer in the Atlantic Fleet that had this equipment. We knew where they were as soon as they hit the Sargasso Sea.

I've always wondered about the size of the nuclear warheads on those torpedoes. Had they fired them, they would have wiped out the Atlantic Fleet and me. We were right above them. And they would have been vaporized, too. Scary stuff, now that I know that.

Not too much misinformation in either show but I expected a bit more information from the one about the sub commanders.

I gotta admit I/we had no idea what was going on at home. All we knew was there were missiles on freighters going to and from Cuba. We set up the blockade and spent about six weeks cruising around Cuba, mostly to keep subs away from the ports. We spent a lot of time outside Havana Harbor making sure no subs got thru. After that, we spent about six weeks at Gitmo. By the time we got back to the States, everything about the Crisis had died down.

Was good to see her again, if only briefly. During the Havana Accords ~ 10 years ago, I did see her, with a bone in her teeth, on the way to the Caribbean Sea to join the flotilla. Never got to see that documentary again, I would have kept a recording of that.

Last I heard of her, she was in the Brazilian Navy, they changed her number to 68. She might still be afloat.

Having been a CIC officer on a frigate with a tail , that did some training on ASW prosecution - the layer is not perfect protection for the sub. It makes it more difficult, yes. But the physics of underwater sound propogation are pretty well understood these days.

And theres more than sonar for detecting subs...

I'm kinda surprised that many ships survived that test. We were right above those Soviet subs and an explosion 22 times greater would certainly have vaporized our ship. No more me. None of my progeny would exist. Poof.

    Thanx for the show.

We just stayed at modified GQ for weeks. Kinda like shift work. Did you get to stop any freighters carrying missiles?

Let's just say our "magic" far surpassed their "magic". We had some of the most advanced ASW gear in the world on our ship.

If you mean innovations in warfare progress as those innovations are defeated by other innovations, I agree.
