Just thought of a random idea
When a genie 2 server or any customer goes into 771 over 2 minutes it should back up to IP.

In the event that someone is in a major storm the box should go into backup mode and try to stream the content similar to how the D* app works in event of 771.

This might be in the works with that new box but just thought it should be something they should develop.

Like ask a message ... ... we are detecting 771 do you want to try IP internet streaming ..

    Thanks .
Hopefully D* can implement something like this..

Came to mind when the other day during a 771 I was able to view on-demand . .. so I thought there should be a backup method for live tv .

Also with all these tv 2 go apps now a days... there should be a back up method.

Kinda sounds like you found the backup method...

But on-demand doesn't work for all programs
    And live tv .

So if I was recording a show and 771 came up I would be unable to watch what was missed

Pretty sure I recall Directv mentioning this as a possibility for the future. One hitch with that is that the streaming always run behind satellite, so it wouldn't be a smooth transition back from streaming to satellite....

I suggested this exact idea to Directv leaders in the past at Dev. Conferences. The problem is the powers that be reside primarily in S. Calif and to some degree Texas (old Uverse TV types). They seem to be surprised how bad 771 rain fade is in other areas of the country such as SE USA.

In my local market, streaming runs about 30 secs behind live TV. I just tried a few shows in the 300's and its about the same or less. I don't believe any transition timing would be too upsetting vs. complete loss of TV which we experience now.

    Nice That's awesome.
Hopefully something will change since a lot of stuff is OTT now ....

But I agree 771 is not as bad as dealing with an outage from cable companies ... those can be hours of no service and repeated issues during the week etc. Lol. Someone I know had 5 cable outages in 2 weeks time... Yea I'll good with an occasional 771

But again good to hear that the idea was presented to someone in a big chair
