As many know, D* paid for numerous ads, some massive, in the Wall Street Journal of October 14, 2007. Among them were black & white ads (the first two half-page ones), half-page ads, a full-page ad, and the biggest possible, the dual page inside middle of the paper.

I don't know who here discussing it hasn't actually seen the ads, however, so I figured I'd post them as attachments. If a mod believes this thread should be merged with one that discusses the ads, feel free to do so.

I wonder if the desired overwhelming customer response to the ads actually happened? Did that advertising pay off?

You advertise in the Journal sometimes not so much for sales as for corporate recognition and a boost to the stock price. Sure, you get customers, but letting the financial community know about the move is probably the goal.

This was definitely one of the most expensive newspaper ad campaigns I've ever seen.

D* also ran a bunch of ads in USA Today this weekend; just about every page you turn a different ad was visible; half page, full page, double page in the middle.

And to get a buzz in the rest of the country's business sections. Stories about DirecTV will start to tout the HD channels.

Lord Vader... can you tell us if there is an MSG HD logo in any of these newspaper ads? I can't decipher most of the small logos.. just curious.

    Thanks.

I'll look, but I'm wondering why someone would want an HD channel dedicated to monosodium glutomate.

n3, jazzy is correct. MSG is shown in the ads. It's on the double page and full page ads.

For those reading the icons, MSG is not in the Sunday supplement insert...

I know. Just giving information for those trying to decipher things. I wouldn't read much into the particular icons as the Sunday ad had stuff that isn't HD until 2008.

As Ken S points out, the target of this campaign was likely investors as opposed to subscribers.

Personally I like the ads, I think that they are very appealing to men in the 35-54 age range who earn enough to spend a little bit on what they want.

I love that DIRECTV is expanding the HD ad campaign nationally ... Get ready for longer CSR hold times, folks! I expect DIRECTV is going to start to get busy!

In one of them, it really misleads about the 70 available now, and saying Spike TV is one of them. Unless they plan to launch it this week, I think they could've at least put a different channel in that spot.
