So I have the Genie HR34 and a Genie thin client. All works perfectly. Very happy with the equipment. I'm considering replacing the thin client with a second Genie....either HR34 or HR44 simply to increase the number of tuners available. I would also have to upgrade the SWM.

Does D* allow a second Genie device? Would the blended 'to be recorded' list for the two boxes be visible on both Genies, or would each box only show what it has set to record? I remember this being a restriction of Whole Home DVR back in the day. :cheers2:

That's been my #1 wish on my list since I got my first HR34, the ability to get a 2nd one. I'm hoping it comes sooner rather than later.

I don't understand the restriction. It's just a 5 tuner box with a few bells and whistles

It's more than just more tuners. I strongly suspect the restriction will be lifted in time. My OoA* guess: 4 months, three weeks and two days.

There are technical reasons two don't always work in the same system well. Someday they will get worked out. But it doesn't seem too be a priority right now. But you can always get another regular DVR to replace your client.

You also need to realize that the people on this forum are not average DirecTV customers. I would be willing to bet that at least 95% of DirecTV customers will never want more than a Genie and 3 clients If you include the ability to add more receivers you could probably take that up to 99% It is just not a high priority to make it work for the very small number that want 2 Genies

Also, having two Genies would require a legacy LNB connected to a SWM16.
I think DirecTV would rather keep installations as simple as possible.

Right, needing a swm16 for only two boxes, clients with multiple Genies, etc etc. Many reasons for why it's not quite so simple.

There is still a limited supply. When they start sitting in their warehouses, the restriction will probably be lifted.

    Right on!

I also believe that the fact that the two Genies requires a SWM16 plays a lot into thi (besides thetechnical fators). Perhaps when DirecTV makes an LNB that supports 16 tuners (cheaper) this can be a reality

I understand the technical issues posted here by those with more knowledge than I, but D* prides itself as a family oriented service provider. So, if you take a household with two kids, you can assume that three tuners are being used at some point during the evening...add a couple of recordings and you're done.

Could the parents just place standard 2 tuner DVRs in the two kids' rooms...yes of course, but with a Genie plus 2 DVRs you then require a SWM16 anyway.

exactly. but then you are paying for 3 receivers instead of 2. and that $6.00 goes a long way

Maybe if you were like me you would understand, wanting one and none in sight.

Thats why the 44 should have had 8 tuners in it.

When we upgraded to the HR34 Genie, DirecTV allowed us to keep our existing HR24 DVR, so we moved our existing DVR to the master bedroom (we previously had an H25 there). That totals to 7 tuners. Not sure if DTV will allow a Genie and two HD DVRs.

They will, however, you would need to be upgraded to a SWM16. That would mean running 3 more coax cables down to where you probably have your main splitter now and replacing that with the SWM16.

    I have a client with an HR34, 3 HR2Xs, 2 clients, and an H20.

All works great except the kid keeps adding shows to the to-do list far beyond the number he could ever hope to watch.
