    Question,

I have NY based service (live in North Jersey) but when I go to my house in FL I usually take one of my boxes with me (I have a dish installed there) and usually have no issues getting everything I get at home. I lost a couple local channels a few years ago when they moved to spot beams, but none of the major networks.

The past few days I’m not getting ABC 7 in. Does anyone now if they changed the beam for that station recently?

    Thanks.

Yep. WABC is now on a spot beam.

    Yep, they did ....

In preparation for the possible turn-off of DNS service due to certain parts of STELAR act not renewed by congress.

DIRECTV duplicated WABC on a local spotbeam and instructed all receivers of the NY market subscribers to tune to it for WABC. And left the nationwide beam only for reception by eligible DNS subs.

Why DIRECTV chose to do this only for WABC and none of the other big 4 network feeds east and west is unknown.

Congress allowed STELA to expire. The law that provided distant network service to be carried on Satellite Services like DIRECTV & Dish. You will only be able to receive local channels in the zip code you’re in going forward. No more getting New York.

Is 396 still Conus for all? I thought all NY'ers received 7 and 396.

For the people in NY who still get 396, why are we getting it?

Ok thanks, my bad then ....

When I read a number of recent posts such as the OP's here of people outside the local spotbeam now unable to receive WABC 7. I took that to mean they couldn't receive it at all.

But I see what they really mean is that they can no longer receive on it channel 7 of the program guide. So those like the OP visiting down in FL. should still be able to receive WABC on channel 396.

The Big 4 are all still available in the 300's.
For whatever reason WABC 7 is the only one no longer available on it's designated channel.

The only thing I can think of is that of all the big 4, at the time negotiations with ABC to carry them post STELAR were in the greatest doubt.

So DIRECTV began moving ahead with preparations to drop WABC's nationwide (or "CONUS") beam signal from 396. And we're likely planning to do the same for west coast KABC on 397 as well, but negotiations with ABC probably improved and then broke through at the 12th hour.

So they never bothered duplicating KABC on both a spotbeam and CONUS one and so far have just left WABC that way ...

    Just my speculation ....

My speculation is that there are more people lying about living in New York than lying about living in Los Angeles. The New York timed programs (Eastern and Central) cover most of the nation's population (47% Eastern plus 29% Central = 76%). Add the west coast people who want network content three hours early and New York becomes an excellent place to say you live.

The CBS, FOX and NBC distants are needed somewhere in the country for their continuing "side deal" delivery. With ABC negotiations ongoing 396 could still be needed for authorized subscribers.

If it were up to me I would turn off the 39x series channels for in-market subscribers - since they have carriage on their own local channels. I believe what we are seeing now is the result of being "in limbo" waiting for a deal with ABC to be cut or be dropped. Unless there is a temporary deal in place DIRECTV cannot legally deliver ABC stations outside of their home markets.

For what it's worth, I am still getting my DNS NBC on 392 and my local NBC Boston on ch 10.

I haven't seen the OP reply back to this thread -- curious if he IS still receiving WABC on 396?

Yes, getting 396 without issue, just can’t get 7.

A number of years ago, I was pretty up on this stuff, however kids, etc have drawn my attention away, so haven’t been very up to date on all things D*.

I read something online that D* cut deals with all the major networks except ABC, which I thought may be part of the issue, but I’m honestly not sure I’m following all the new legalities (not that I’ve put more than 10-15 min into figuring it out).

    Thanks all!

Thanks for the clarification. Nice that you can still receive the station, even if it’s not quite where you expect to find it.
