I know you guys have gotten these questions before, and I actually understand the reverse mirror system pretty well.

    My question is more specific:

I live in Vegas and want to watch the MSU/UM game this weekend at 3:30 pm. Usually, when we get an ESPN mirror it's in HD... this week, it seems like it's only in SD.

(I'd post the coverage maps but apparently I haven't posted enough to use URLs. But it's at ESPN or Hdsportsguide)

I've been told D* has much better sports packages, and I wish I would have signed up. (I'm with DISH). My question is... if I go to a bar with D* and ESPN Gameplan and all that junk, would I be able to see the game in HD? Or am I screwed over no matter where I am in Vegas because no one can get it in HD?

(Also... wtf? Why is ESPN doing this anyway? Why wouldn't they want their best games to be in HD?)

Looking at the maps, it looks like Clemson/North Carolina is the HD reverse mirror this week on ESPN. So, Michigan/MSU is only in HD if it is on ABC. Bars with DirecTV and Gameplan are SOL.

Up until this year, the 3:30 game that was assured HD was a Big Ten game (contractual). Something must have changed in the contracts this year.

It must be a technical limitation (i.e., ESPN doesn't have enough bandwidth to send out even one more HD feed). It's a crappy one, thats for sure.

I know that the ESPN alternates were in HD for the World Cup...I guess the difference is that they didn't have multiple ABC HD feeds going out as well.

It is not a contractual issue as last year a few Big Ten games on ESPN were not in HD as part of the reverse mirror.

    http://mattsarzsports.com/2009/BigTen.aspx

The general rule is the following

1)Look at the ABC coverage map and see whether the Big Ten game is going to more than 50% of the country on ABC.
a)If it is, then the Big Ten game will not be in HD on ESPN. The other half of the mirror will be.
b)If the Big Ten game is not going to over half of the country on ABC, then it will be in HD on ESPN.

The goal is to get a pair of HD games to as much of the country as possible. So if the Big Ten game will be seen by the majority of the country on ABC, then the other 1/2 or the mirror will be seen in HD on ESPN.

For this week, 68% of the country will see Michigan-Michigan St. on ABC, so Clemson-North Carolina will get distributed to that same 68% on ESPN, both in HD.

In week two, Iowa St. at Iowa was seen by only 8% of the country on ABC, so 92% were targeted to see it on ESPN and it was shown in HD on ESPN.

Considering pay TV penetration, this is way more complicated than it needs to be

So, here in Dallas, even though the MSU vs UM game is on #206, ESPNHD and even though the guide shows the HD bug, it's only going to be in SD?

#210? Didn't even know I got that channel. Guess I'll have to add it to the guide.
