I have an HR44. I believe I saw that with a 4K Genie Mini connected to my HR44 I can watch on demand 4K movies but not 4K broadcasts. That is fine with me, I don't really need 4K TV but I'd be nice to watch DTV Cinema movies at 4K. But on checking the directv website it is saying an HR54 is required for 4K. Is there any way to still activate 4K service on my account and upgrade my existing wired genie mini to a 4K genie mini? Or will they not do that anymore?

    For 4K service you'll need either a HR54 or a HS17 along with a C61K-700 client.

Darn, thanks. Was I imagining all that, or was it a thing at one time?

I don't recall seeing that. 4K service needs HDMI output 2.0. The HR54 and HS17 HDMI output is 1.4. That is why you need a C61K-700 client.

There was a very brief period you could have 4K activated on a C61K and a HR44 but it has been years

CH 104 is a fulltime 4K UHD channel. but most of the time it's boring for me anyways. i think the 4K UHD movies are 11.00 a pop at that rate id'e rather buy the disc

I don't think the HR44 was ever capable of passing a 4k signal, not in it's current configuration.

Not passing. The HR54 doesn’t pass a 4K signal either. However they used to allow 4K service on your C61K with a HR44 as your main genie for a brief period before requiring the 54

The HR44 could tune the satellite signal and pass the data to a 4K client.

DIRECTV had a plan to use two transponders as a pair to deliver 4K programming.
The HR44 can't do paired transponders (signal spread over more than one transponder).
The HR54 and HS17 can do paired transponders and pass the data to a 4K client.
Even though DIRECTV does not need to use paired transponders at this time, they are "future proofing" their systems by restricting 4K to HR54 or HS17 with a separate 4K client. Technically they still could deliver 4K to a client through a HR44 - but they don't want to.

There have been considered business decisions that govern what you may or may not do in many cases. Policy dictates a late model Genie for 4K. Policy dictates that you can't have more than one Genie. Policy dictates that they treat OTA and external storage like failed experiments.

Reasoning that something could technically be done doesn't win out over the business decisions that have been made. Some of the business decisions are based on technical limitations but they are business decisions nonetheless.

Not quite true. The following movies are playing on channels 107 CINE4K and 108 CINE4K2 today and are well below the price you stated..."Like a Boss" $5.99-2 day..."Bloodshot" $7.99-2 day..."Think Like a Dog" $5.99-2 day.
