The New York Times began its thorough obituary with the following quote (keep in mind this was before The Beatles):

CHICAGO, Aug. 22, 1959 — Some fainted, others sobbed with delight and still others surged toward him to gaze into his face, crowned with a crop of wavy hair.

And so went the mass love affair between Edd (Kookie) Byrnes, 26, and a throng of 18,000 cheering bobby sox fans yesterday at Midway Airport. — The Associated Press

“77 Sunset Strip” is one of the late-50's TV shows that still play in my memory. RIP Kookie. You were the ginchiest!

The host of the Wheel of Fortune pilot.

Warner Bothers was famous, or infamous, for feuding with its TV "stars", and Burns/Kookie left the show before being enticed back with a more substantial role as a detective.
