I have four, Satellite AR, two Satfinder and Satfinder Lite
Get to Play Store, search and install, try all, see what you like
I'm using big tablet, so for S4 it could be different apps better

There's a free app called "Satellite Locator" by Norsat on iOS that seems to work pretty well. You need to put in the info for the Directv sats (really 101 is all you need since 99 and 103 are so close to it) as it only comes preloaded with some European sats, that takes about 30 seconds then it is good to go.

One hitch I found is that it only seems to work in portrait mode, it doesn't handle landscape mode for some reason. For the purposes of finding a line of sight over a tree it will take you 5 seconds to confirm yes/no whether you're fine or if you'll have a problem where you don't want to pay for something you'll never use again this one works great.

Wow I was way off :) I would guess now the Tree is about 30-35 ft high and the dish will be bout 75-80 ft away. I used all 3 apps from where i wanted to put the dish and it clears the trees by a good margin.. All 3 birds sit about half the size of the tree up from the tree. cant wait to get into the house now!!

If indeed you are a computational ''nurd'', why not try the Boy Scout way I outlined earlier. Just for fun.

The only thing is, for the fun computation you suggest, you need a convenient way to determine the angle of the Sun above the horizon at the time of measurement. Since the length of the shadows cast by the trees depends upon it.

Not unless you're doing it at different times. Remember: There's a known shadow caster height that's part of the equation. Could even be a hooman bean!
