Hey everyone...I'm moving into a much larger home and will be using the Movers program to get installed in my new place. The additional rooms and 2 floors add a lot of complexity with the install and I'm having a hard time deciding the best way to go about it.

Current House - (3) HR 24s, 4 TVS...one is slaved SD from one of the HR24s. Only 2 people in the house with 2 TVs being used at any one time. We sometimes have 3-4 programs being DVR'd at the same time, but with 6 tuners, there are no conflicts.

I know that I can get a Genie with my DirecTV moving deal. I will be packing all 3 of my HR 24s with me to the new house...and I guess I will return them if need be if I go with the Genie.

New House - I can see 4 definite rooms that we want HD right now in when moving in. There are another 3 rooms that I would like to have TV in the future and I would have no problem slaving the signal from one of the main 4 rooms to one of the other rooms. The bottom line is we don't have that many TVs now but we will sometime down the road. I wouldn't mind having the Genie + (1) HR24...that would give us 7 tuners and plenty of flexibility. Of course, I would like to keep monthly costs to a minimum...so keep that in mind. My goal is to have 5-7 tuners...and at least 4 rooms hooked up initially and I can slave the others later as needed. I don't need to be charged for 8 rooms of programming...just up to 4.

    My questions...
    • What is the best most cost effective method for my initial installation with 4 main rooms?
    • Does it matter that I have a Genie connected to 4 rooms? or is it the same cost to have a Genie in 3 rooms with a HR24 synched to it?
    • Do you have to pay for each room the Genie is installed in even though its one box that can power multiple rooms?
    • Can the HD signal from one of the TVs be slaved to another room without having to pay an extra fee? How is this achieved via HDMI?
Thanks in advance....your help is appreciated.

    1. Get the Genie and keep the 3 HR24s
    2. The Genie needs some sort of clients, be it an RVU TV or a DirecTV RVU client.
    3. ???
    4. You don pay for "slaved mirrors" but A) you must pay the installer on the "side" to do this for you, to you can do it yourself as DirecTV does not support this kind of mirrors. and there is no current "cheap" way to mirror on HD.

I would keep the HR24s, it will have no effect on your cost. DVR is single fee, additional locations are $6 whether it uses a RVU TV, Genie client, DirecTV receiver or DirecTV DVR. On the HD slaves if the locations are physically close (15 - 20 feet) you can get a HDMI splitter and run both TVs. Longer runs are possible but the equipment is a little more costly. Splitter example: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10113&cs_id=1011306&p_id=8204&seq=1&format=2 Long extender:

Okay...I get what you guys are saying. Get the Genie because its free (after shipping). Then I will have the Genie + 3 HR 24s for extra storage. It won't cost anything more, because DirecTV charges for extra rooms that are wired directly (without slaving). I think we will be okay using 3 rooms at first...but will probably need have a 4th hooked up at some point in time. I'm thinking that I might as well do this during the initial install. But I think with the mover deal, I only get 3 rooms hooked up...so I would have to pay extra for the 4th room.

Thanks for the link to monoprice ! A few of the slaved rooms are on adjoining walls...so this HDMI splitter will work nicely in those rooms...and not very expensive either.

The movers connection is free in your case, they will hook up all four of your receivers, what they will not do (for free) is mirror your other TVs

Just to clarify even more, add this "disclaimer" to my post.

…as long as you have been with DirecTV at least 12 consecutive months.

...and have not placed another mover's order in the past 12 months. Sometimes a promotional upgrade offer can effect this as well.

Yes, but not quite. Sometimes people Google questions relating to DirecTV and dbstalk comes up in the search results.
So having that additional info can help out somebody else who stumbled on this thread ;)
