Steve, Register for the party that you usually agree with and at least be able to take part in their primaries. But unlike some people I've known who lived in NY, please make sure you vote for the best people. My Grandmother used to just vote democrat down the line, you'd ask her who she voted for and she would just say "Democrat". Now she being a working class immigrant who came to the US in 1903 (died in 1975), you can imagine that there was very little she would have in common with a Republicans of the time, but it always seemed to me to be weird to not know who you were voting for. My father never voted in a primary because he never felt at home with any of those parties. He would have preferred places like Georgia or Montana where you don't have to be a member to vote in a primary. But with the recent issues with Bob Barr and Cynthia McKinney, you may see primarys require party membership in the future.
