    Hi all,
I've picked up an AM21 off of Ebay and it does not seem
to be picking up all my stations and signal strength doesn't seem
as strong as it should be for my location. Any ideas on how to "wake" it up?
    thanks

You will need to more specific.

    What stations doesn't it get?
How far is that from you?
    What antenna are you using?

AM21 was never designed to "TUNE" all TV stations. It was preprogrammed for stations in different DMAs.

No it wasn't, it is a tuner just like the one in your TV. And when it came out it scanned for channels and found them all, whether there was guide data or not. Later Directv changed the RECEIVER software which hobbled it and it only able to find channels in Directv's database (which was missing more and more newly added subchannels over time due to another issue also unrelated to the AM21 itself)

    More information is needed...
What Directv receiver are you using (very important)?
Are you missing full-power channels or low-power channels? Some subchannels or the all subchannels from a station?

And now, once again, it will scan and display all channels your antenna receives once again on the HR44 and HR54 receivers. And the database has been updated.

I'm using it on a HR24-100. My other AM21s pickup NYC stations well (I am about 45 miles from transmitters)
My HR54 no longer works with the AM21 after the recent software upgrade
(I'm not home right now to check version, was about 7/25/19)

If you have another working AM21, have you swapped the working AM21 with the one just purchased? Or moved the good AM21 to the location where the new one doesn't work?

That's the only way to be certain the new AM21 is the problem.

BTW, I don't know that any s/w update on the HR54 broke AM21's. Mine is fine.

yes, most likely :-( It's weird though since it is picking up some channels,
just not as many as my other AM21s (and I did swap it with a AM21 that was
working fine with the HR24-100 receiver) I guess it's just a flaky unit!

not sure if you are interesting in HW troubleshooting …

I would check voltage rails with DMM, noise and ripples (here is bad capacitors discovering) by O-scope...
