I currently have an HR44 and four HR24s. That configuration has worked well for me for several years.

I now need to add an additional device, I prefer to add another HR24.

At this point cost would be my most important consideration.

Where should I go to obtain that device, Directv?, Third Party or try to reactivate one that my son has and was not required to return when it was replaced.

Coax is already run to the switch so I assume little more to do than install and activate?

    How should I proceed?

I suggest call 1-800-531-5000 and If the HR24 you have is from your account - You can activate it at that time -- If not -D* will send you HR to activate it should be a HR24 --Buying one from Solid signal will get you a HR24 - BUT you will still have to call D* to activate it .

    Call and find out

You have the old 24, make the call to D*, that seems to be the easiest thing to do. Shouldn't cost you a dime. They seem to be able to easily activate receivers, finally.

Thanks for the advice. After talking to my son, I found out it is still active on his account but not in use or even connected to a TV. If he deactivates it and they don't request its return, what are the chances I could get it reactivated on my account?

Slim to none. ATT is a PITA about this and being rational is just get you aggravated. They don't do rational. Do you sub to the Protection Plan? If you do, you should be more than eligible for an "upgrade". If you don't sub to the PP and are worried about the cost of a 24, subscribe today to the Protection Plan and wait a week or so and get that "upgrade". Not sure when the upgrade thing kicks in.

"The Plan coverage commences one (1) calendar month from the date of purchase and is effective for a period of six (6) months, billed monthly. After six (6) months the Plan will automatically renew on a month basis unless the Plan is canceled"..."Being enrolled in the Plan for greater than twelve (12) consecutive months also allows you to upgrade your DIRECTV receiver every two (2) years from the initial date of installation of your DIRECTV system or from the date of any prior upgrade received".

Okay, want to save money? Get the PP and wait a month.

His son's HR24 is currently active on the son's account, not on am3211's account, so the odds of getting it activated on his account are pretty slim.

Upgrading an H24 to an HR24 would be an upgrade and covered by the protection plan, but is adding an ADDITIONAL HR24 considered a free upgrade under the PP?

"Your upgrade can range from a single receiver to a Whole Home HD DVR which may include up to three (3) additional DIRECTV receivers"..."If you upgrade your DIRECTV equipment under the Plan, you will be subject to the terms of the DIRECTV Customer Agreement and be required to sign a new twenty-four (24)-month Equipment Lease Agreement which may include additional monthly equipment fees".

Give AT&T a call. If you are in good enough standing they will upgrade you at no cost. At most it will be $200.
