This is what is odd, with Cinemax being so much slower than HBO. HBO runs Cinemax, so I would guess that things wouold be encoded in a similar manner. If they are all on DirecTV's servers, it is hard to figure out why there is such a dramatic speed difference. Maybe they give extra bandwidth to HBO because there are so many more subscribers and original series.

I can't remember ever having Cinimax, and even on the free preview, you can't try their VOD. All of this is to say  since I can't tell what the programing bit-rate is.
Starz HD can be around 6 Mb/s, where SHO tends to be above 10 Mb/s.

What about DirecTV Cinema stuff (PPV)? I rented Zero Dark Thirty on Friday 3/29/13. Started watching and about 20-30 minutes into it I started to get buffering issues. Stopped movie, thought I'd let it "catch up", but no dice. A few hours later it was still at 20%. Eventually downloaded (checked it the next morning), but wow, never have seen one take so long to download.

I initially suspected my ISP, but I checked and my download speeds were normal that night (per SpeedTest.net; my dl speed is 18-20 mb/s). I even reset my router to be sure, but still wouldn't download fast enough to watch.

This is the first time I've ordered a PPV and had it buffer so much I couldn't watch it.

Same with me on the same movie. downloaded really slow. I have 30/5 service, and typically can get that on other sources.

Yes. Downloading "Sky Fall" took hours.
