Aretha Franklin, the "Queen of Soul", died today at the age of 76. She was signed at the age of 18 by Columbia Records, but her real success as a recording artist didn't come until her first album for Atlantic Records, "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You", was released in 1967.

Colbert did a nice tribute last night with his band playing her songs as instrumentals at every commercial break. They played Aretha's Kennedy Center performance at the end of the show.

Colbert was present in the wings for the performance. On his show he said before she started singing he thought to himself "I wish I could have heard her in her prime". Then she started singing and showed that she still had her skills.

    RIP Ms. Franklin.

SiriusXM/XM is playing all her music on channel 49 for the next week. I'm really enjoying that channel.

I hope they run it for more than one week.

CBS Sunday Morning played Franklin's "Skylark," one of her early recordings in full accompanied by many still pictures of the singer, most of which I had not seen in previous news reports. "Skylark" was one of the 20 defining songs listed by the New York Times in their August 17 issue. You can also find the song on YouTube.
